Allegheny Doubles Up St. John Fisher, 8-4

SANFORD, Fla. -- The Allegheny College baseball team doubled up St. John Fisher University en route to an 8-4 victory over the Cardinals on Friday at Sanford Memorial Stadium in Sanford, Florida.

The Cardinals (4-5) plated the game's first run, but the Gators (4-4) rebounded with six unanswered in the second, third, and fourth innings to take an insurmountable lead. Eight different batters finished with a hit, and seven scored a run for Allegheny, which snapped a three-game skid on its southern spring break trip.

Tied at 1-all in the third, Tyler Skaggs (Champion Heights, Ohio/Champion) connected for his second home run in as many days. Skaggs' two-run bomb put Allegheny ahead for good and signaled the end of the day for Fisher's starting pitcher. The second-year catcher then provided two of the team's three runs in the fourth inning with a two-run base hit that extended the lead to 6-1.

After being held in check by Dawson Thomas (Espyville, Pa./Conneaut Area) throughout the early innings, Fisher loaded the bases and drove in three runs in the fifth. Clinging to a 6-4 lead with two runners on, Mitchell Swineford (Duncansville, Pa./Bishop Guilfoyle) entered out of the bullpen and quickly halted the scoring threat. From there, four Allegheny relievers combined for 4.1 shutout innings with only two hits and one walk allowed.
