Grand Slam!

High Point, N.C. - Finding the team down early in a 5-0 deficit, head coach Clint Helton made the adjustments needed to help the Scots climb back to eventually win the game.

After the seemingly endless first inning was over, Maryville found themselves down 5-0. Coach Helton made a key substitution that brought life back to the team. Sophomore Nick Curry came in to pinch hit for Zach Devries, and the rest was history. The Knoxville native was 5-5 on the day, scoring three runs and bringing in five RBI. Curry was a home run away from hitting for the cycle with two singles, one double, and one triple.

Curry brought home the first two runs of the game for the Scots after Frank Derner was walked and Colin Dunworth singled through the left side to get two on base for the Scots. Curry singled up the middle to bring both home, narrowing Greensboro's lead to 5-2.

Greensboro would take back the two runs scored by Maryville with two of their own, one in the third and one in the fourth, to go up 7-2.

The fifth inning was the breaking point for MC, with Curry, Matt Hall, and Reece Jordan all getting on base with singles. Det Dettwiller would get on base next on an error by the short stop, which allowed Curry to score from third. With the bases loaded once more with only one out, Ashton Whiteaker found himself at the plate.

Whiteaker stepped up to face the pitcher and hit a moon shot over the left center wall for a grand slam and his fourth home run of the season, 14th of his career, and first grand slam. The bomb by Whiteaker tied the game up at 7 apiece. Maryville would take the lead in the sixth on a sac fly by Reece Jordan that scored Nick Curry

In the seventh, Curry would once again find himself at the plate, and singled up the right side to the second baseman, which allowed Colin Dunworth and Frank Derner to both score again. 10-7 Maryville.

The Pride of Greensboro would put a runner across in the seventh to put some hope back into the dugout for the team. Heading into the ninth inning, the Scots held a 10-8 advantage.

In the top of the ninth, Nick Curry would once again step up to the plate and add to his dominant performance on the day, hitting a missile to center field for an RBI triple, bringing in Dunworth on the hit. Curry would come home on a Jacob Johnston single to left field. Reece Jordan would then cap off the scoring for the Scots, adding an insurance run on a single to left center field that scored Matt Hall. 13-9 Scots.

Greensboro threatened in the bottom of the ninth, getting across two scores with two outs. Reliever Xavier Resto would put to bed The Pride's hopes of a comeback, getting the final out via a ground out to short stop Jacob Johnston

Winning pitcher Pete Pappas would go 3.2 innings for the Scots, allowing only two runs on two hits with two strikeouts. Resto went 2.2 innings, giving up only one run on one hit with three strikeouts.

Maryville improves to 10-3 on the season with a matchup against Adrian on deck tomorrow in the final game for the Scots in the Triad Invitational. Adrian sits at 4-5 on the year after a close loss to Greensboro on Friday (Greensboro won that game on a walk-off fielders choice that was fiercely contested by the coach). Adrian is playing Montclair today before facing the Scots tomorrow at 11:30 a.m.
