FORT PIERCE, Fla. (March 8) – The Waynesburg University baseball team closed its spring break trip with a 7-0 defeat against Gettysburg in Florida on Saturday.

The Yellow Jackets move to 3-7 on the season while Gettysburg, who received votes in the latest D3baseball.com top 25 poll, remain unbeaten at 7-0.

Waynesburg was stymied by Gettysburg starting pitcher, Alex Wilkie-Viscio, who threw a nine-inning complete game shutout. He allowed just four Jacket hits, struck out seven and walked none. He retired 16-consecutive batters and retired the Jackets in order from the second-through-sixth innings.

The Bullets took a 2-0 lead in the third inning as a hit batsman and two bunts loaded the bases with nobody out. An RBI single plated two runs before Gavin Pratt (Carmichaels, Pa. / Carmichaels Area) worked out of the jam with consecutive strikeouts.

Gettysburg tacked on a third and fourth run on the base paths in the fourth and fifth innings. The Bullets scored on a wild pitch and scored on a first-and-third play to go ahead 4-0. A two-run triple and a sacrifice fly in the sixth brought the margin to 7-0.

Waynesburg notched base hits and put runners on third base in the seventh and eighth innings but Wilkie-Viscio escaped without allowing a run on both occasions. He notched his sixth three-up three-down inning of the ballgame in the ninth to secure the Gettysburg victory.

Pratt allowed four earned runs on two hits in five innings of work. He struck out six and walked five in the ballgame. Alex Nicholson (Cortland, Ohio / Mathews) did not allow a run and struck out two in two innings of relief.

Connor Hamrick (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Shaler) notched his first hit of the season in the seventh inning to halt Wilkie-Viscio's string of consecutive batters retired.

Waynesburg travels to (RV) Muskingum next Saturday.
