Chatterton, Slevin help #17 RMC Baseball rally past SU

ASHLAND, Va. – Freshman CJ Chatterton (Rockville, Md./Georgetown Prep) drove in five, including two in a three-run eighth, and junior Sam Slevin (Virginia Beach, Va./Frank Cox) picked up the win as the No. 17 Randolph-Macon baseball team nipped Shenandoah 7-6 on Sunday afternoon.

The Basics

Score: Randolph-Macon 7, Shenandoah 6

Venue: Hugh Stephens Field at Estes Park

Records: RMC 5-4, 2-2 ODAC; SU 9-5, 1-1 ODAC

How It Happened:

  • The Hornets manufactured a run in the top of the third before the Yellow Jackets got on the scoreboard in the fifth. Freshman Tanner Gates (Colonial Heights, Va./Colonial Heights) had a leadoff double down the left field line. Sophomore James Baffone (Wilmington, Del./St. Mark's) had a single to center that moved Gates to third and he took second on the throw to third. With one away, Chatterton doubled down the right field line to knock in both runners and give RMC a 2-1 edge. A two-out single by junior Carter Schmitt (Glen Allen, Va./St. Christopher's) brought home Chatterton, giving the Yellow Jackets a 3-1 lead.
  • Sophomore Peter Phillips (Virginia Beach, Va./Ocean Lakes) pitched the first five innings for RMC, allowing four hits and one run with three walks and three strikeouts.
  • After SU pulled within one in the top of the sixth, RMC responded in the bottom of the frame. Gates had a leadoff double and scored on a two-out single by Chatterton to give the home team a 4-2 advantage.
  • The Hornets posted a pair in both the seventh and eighth to take a 6-4 lead.
  • In the bottom of the eighth, senior Chaz Harvey (Charlottesville, Va./The Miller School) was plunked with one out and Baffone walked with two away. A double by junior Logan Duff (Forest, Va./Liberty Christian) knocked in Harvey to make it 6-5. Chatterton hit a fly ball that the left fielder appeared to lose in the sun. It fell for a double, allowing Baffone and Duff to score and give RMC a 7-6 edge.
  • Slevin kept the Hornets off the board in the top of the ninth to secure the victory.
