Hampden-Sydney Wins On The Road At Ferrum 14-11

FERRUM, Va. -- Senior first baseman and team captain Grayson Harris (Moseley) had two hits and three RBIs, and sophomore left fielder Ian Martin (Martinsville) had three hits and one RBI, to lead Hampden-Sydney College to a 14-11 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) baseball road win at Ferrum College on Tuesday in Ferrum. Sophomore right-hander Logan Benton (North Chesterfield) gained the pitching win—the first of his collegiate career—for the visiting Tigers (5-9, 1-3), and junior right-hander Alex Fitz-Hugh (Chesterfield) earned the mound save against the host Panthers (9-6, 2-2). It was the first ODAC win of the season for the Tigers, and the first conference win for first-year head coach Michael Mulvey.

H-SC scored 14 runs on 14 hits with no errors … scoring one run in the second inning, nine runs in the third, and two runs each in the fourth and eighth. FC scored 11 runs on 13 hits with three errors … scoring two runs in the first inning, three runs in the third, one run in the fourth, two runs in the sixth and three runs in the eighth.

In the second, Martin (3-5, RBI) singled to left field with two outs, advanced to second on a single to left field by freshman second baseman Gavin Smith (Mechanicsville) (1-3), and scored on a run-scoring single by senior shortstop Jaxon Masterson (Raleigh, NC) (2-4, 2 RBIs).

In the third, Harris (2-4, 3 RBIs) was hit by a pitch to open the frame, advanced to third on a single up the middle by senior center fielder and team captain Jack Wilson (Petersburg) (2-6, RBI), and crossed the plate when junior third baseman Matthew Arnold (Danville) (RBI) provided a sacrifice fly RBI to center field. Wilson scored when junior right fielder and team captain Chase Sanford (Mechanicsville) (2-6, RBI) followed with an RBI double to right center field, and Sanford scored when sophomore right-handed starting pitcher Jase Howell (Portsmouth) (1-2, RBI) reached on an infield single, with Howell advancing to second on a single to right center field by Martin. The Tigers had the bases loaded with two outs after Masterson reached on a fielding error at third base, and Howell crossed the plate when sophomore catcher Noah Leonard (Troutville) (1-5, 2 RBIs) reached on a fielding error at shortstop, leaving the bases full … Harris then added a three-run double to left field during his second plate appearance of the at-bat that plated Martin, Masterson and Leonard. Wilson followed with an RBI single to left field, scoring Harris, and Wilson then stole second and third base, scoring on a throwing error during his steal of third … as the Tigers led 10-2.

In the fourth, Howell walked and stole second base ahead of Smith being hit by a pitch with one out, and both runners advanced a base on a wild pitch. Following another out, Leonard provided a two-run down the left field line with Howell and Smith scoring for a 12-5 advantage.

In the eighth, Sanford singled up the middle, stole second base and advanced to third on a fly ball out, and scored on an RBI double by Martin. Martin advanced to third on a ground ball out and crossed the plate on a run-scoring triple down the left field line by Masterson for a 14-8 lead.

Howell started on the mound for the Garnet & Grey and pitched the first 3.0 innings, allowing nine hits and six runs, all earned, with two strikeouts and one walk. Benton (1-0) followed with 4.0 solid innings of middle relief for his first collegiate pitching win, yielding one hit and two runs, both earned, with two strikeouts and one walk. Senior right-hander Justin Reynolds (Virginia Beach) tossed two-thirds of an inning, allowing three hits and three runs, all earned, with no strikeouts and three walks. Fitz-Hugh recorded the final four outs for his second save of the season and the seventh of his career, yielding no hits and no runs with one strikeout and one walk.

H-SC returns home to welcome St. Mary's College of Maryland for a non-conference doubleheader on Wednesday, March 12, beginning at 4 p.m.—the two games scheduled for seven innings each. The two games were rescheduled from February 16.
