No. 9 Salisbury Baseball no-hits WPU, 14-1 in seven

SALISBURY, Md. – The ninth-ranked Salisbury University baseball team wrapped up a long homestand with a commanding performance in all aspects of the game, holding William Peace without a hit and speeding by the Pacers 14-1 in seven innings on Wednesday afternoon at Donnie Williams Sea Gull Baseball Stadium.

By keeping WPU out of the hit column, Kyle Speas, Aiden Hankins, and Shawn Rosemond combined for the Sea Gulls' first team no-hitter since Feb. 27, 2010, when SU's Dustin Herbert no-hit St. Mary's (Md.) over seven innings in a 4-0 triumph.

The Pacers notched the first run of the game in the top of the second inning on back-to-back two-out errors at short. The Sea Gulls got that run back and then some in the home second, as BK Wilson followed up three straight walks with an opposite field grand slam to left, giving SU an instant 4-1 cushion.

SU tacked on two more in the third thanks to back-to-back Pacer errors at short. Jackson Inman brought the first run home on a sac fly, then Andrew Kell hit an RBI groundout. Then in the fourth, Danny Sheeler was plunked and scored two batters later on a Noah Burroughs double to make it 7-1.

The Sea Gulls poured it on with crooked numbers in the fifth and sixth. The fifth inning saw two-out runs score on a Sheeler single, Dylan Winebrenner triple, and Burroughs double. In the sixth it was another two-out rally with tallies coming from a triple by Wilson and single by Ben Anderson, plus a two-run base knock by Kell to push the margin to 14-1 and trigger the run rule to end the game after seven innings.

GAME NOTES

  • BK Wilson finished a double shy of the cycle at the top of the Sea Gull lineup, going 3-for-5 with a triple, grand slam, stolen base, three runs, and five RBIs.
  • Noah Burroughs finished 2-for-3 with two doubles, two RBIs, and a run scored, plus three of SU's seven stolen bases for the day.
  • Andrew Kell went 2-for-4 with a run and two RBIs.
  • Dylan Winebrenner tripled, scored a run, and drove in another, finishing 1-for-2.
  • Cole Swift went 1-for-2 with two walks, two steals, and two runs scored.
  • Kyle Speas (1-0) buzzed through the Pacers for the first five innings, giving up an unearned run with no hits, no walks, and two strikeouts on 50 pitches.
  • Aiden Hankins pitched a 1-2-3 sixth, and Shawn Rosemond finished off the no-no with a scoreless seventh.

The Sea Gulls will hit the road for the first time this season with a trio of games in Montclair, N.J., starting on Friday against 13th-ranked Penn State Harrisburg. First pitch from Yogi Berra Stadium is slated for 2:30 p.m.
