Waynesburg tangles with (RV) Muskingum

NEW CONCORD, Ohio (March 14) – The Waynesburg University baseball team dropped a pair of nine inning ballgames at Muskingum on Friday afternoon.

The Yellow Jackets move to 3-9 on the season while the Fighting Muskies, who continue to receive votes in the D3baseball.com top 25 poll, rise to 13-1. Waynesburg's last five games have been against opponents receiving votes in the national rankings.

The Muskies knocked 22 hits and scored multiple runs in five different innings on their way to a 13-1 victory in game one. Muskingum held the Jackets off the scoreboard for the first seven inning on their way to a 10-3 victory in game two.

Game 1 – Muskingum 13, Waynesburg 1

Muskingum notched seven extra-base hits and scored multiple runs in the first, fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh innings. The Jackets only held the Muskies off the scoreboard in the third. 

Waynesburg's lone run came in the fourth inning as Marcos Mendez (Ponce, Puerto Rico / Westminster (Md.)) tripled to lead off the frame and scored on a base hit by Trent Giraffa (Hanover, Pa. / Delone Catholic).

Mendez and Jordan Mosley (St. Albans, W.Va. / St. Albans) each had two hits for the Jackets. Dalton Lucey (Waynesburg, Pa. / West Greene) took the loss after allowing 16 hits, 10 runs and seven earned runs in 5.1 innings. Mike McCready (Greensburg, Pa. / Greensburg Central Catholic) allowed two earned runs in 2.2 innings.

Game 2 – Muskingum 10, Waynesburg 3

In the second game of the doubleheader, the Jackets were matched up with Muskingum starting pitcher Shoei Yamashita, who entered the ballgame as the Ohio Athletic Conference's (OAC) leader in earned run average and hits allowed per nine innings.

Yamashita limited Waynesburg to no runs on three hits and one walk in seven innings. Meanwhile the Muskies plated multiple runs in three innings, four in the third, three in the fifth and two in the seventh, to build a 10-0 lead.

In the top of the eighth, Landen Lydick (Woodsfield, Ohio. / Monroe Central) and Dalton Mount (Sykesville, Md. / Westminster) led off the inning with back-to-back singles. Lydick scored on a throwing error and Mount came home on a wild pitch.

Hunter Hamilton (Holbrook, Pa. / West Greene) walked and scored on a throwing error in the ninth for Waynesburg's third run.

Waynesburg starter Ethan Erhard (Greensburg, Pa. / Hempfield) took the setback after allowing five runs, three earned, on seven hits in four innings. Matthew Corte-Gaskill (Wake Forest, N.C. / Knightdale) worked a scoreless eighth inning.

Alec Engelmore (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Shaler) had two hits and a double. Mendez walked and doubled. 


Waynesburg travels to Pitt-Greensburg on Monday for a doubleheader. First pitch is slate for 12 p.m.
