CONWAY, Ark. (3/15/2025) – Behind 14 runs in the first game and a complete game from senior John Steed, the Nichols College Baseball team swept Hendrix College in Saturday's double header from Warrior Baseball Field on the final day of the Southern Trip. The Bison won 14-10 in game one before a 6-5 win in game two.
Junior Julian Galvan finished the afternoon going 4-10 with two RBI and five runs scored to lead the Bison offensively. Freshman Collin Harty went 4-9 with five RBI and one run scored, while catcher Liam Flynn was 4-8 with four RBI, four runs scored, and two walks.
Steed (3-0) threw 9.0 innings for his first of his career, while fanning seven batters, and allowing five runs. Senior Tyler Moniz-Witten (1-0), threw a team high 3.0 innings in game one to earn his first win with the team, after striking out 2 in relief.
Game One: Nichols 14 Hendrix 10
Nichols opened the scoring in the top of the first inning as they have done for much of the young season. Senior Ben Jerome doubled to jump start the Bison offense. He advanced on a passed ball and scored on a Flynn sac-fly. Teammate Karl Miller, reached on an error, and then scored on a single to left center off the bat of Harty. Nichols led 2-0 after one inning.
The home team plated three runs in the bottom of the second inning on two hits and a pair of walks and took a 3-2 lead. The Bison answered with a pair of runs in the top of third inning. A Galvan double and Flynn walk, both reached to open the inning. Harty doubled down the left field line, playing Galvan and Flynn, to regain the lead, 4-2.
The Warriors answered Nichols, with a pair of their own and led 5-4 after three innings. The back and forth did not stop there, as the teams each scored runs in the fifth, to tie the game at 7-7 after five. Nichols took the lead for good in the sixth inning, scoring four runs on four hits and an error.
Freshman Sean McGee doubles and Jerome singles to place runners at the corners. Galvan reached first on an error, scoring Jerome and McGee. Fynn doubled and freshman Ryan Keating also doubled to make it 11-7 Bison.
Nichols scored two more runs in the seventh, thanks to an RBI double from Galvan and RBI single from Flynn. Nichols hung on and won 14-10 in game one of the double-header.
Game Two: Nichols 6 Hendrix 5
Similar to game one, Nichols opened the scoring, with three runs in the bottom of the first inning. Back-to-back walks from Jerome and Galvan, led to a Flynn single, that scored Jerome. Miller was then hit by a pitch to load the bases. Harty walked in a run. Keating hit into a double play but scored Flynn to take a 3-0 Bison lead after one inning.
In the bottom half of the inning, the Warriors added a pair of runs on three hits and two Bison errors. Hendrix later tied the game in the third inning, with three straight singles.
Nichols regained the lead when, Galvan reached on a fielder's choice and junior Dylan Moran scored to take a 4-3 lead. In the seventh inning, Flynn doubled to open the inning, Miller advanced Flynn to third with a sac bunt and Harty singled in Flynn. Nichols led 5-3, before adding the winning run in the top of the eighth. Senior Andrew Croteau scored on a double play to make it 6-3 Bison.
A two run eight inning, for the Warriors put the pressure back on the Bison, but Steed was lights out for the Bison in the ninth, with a strike out, fly out and ground out to seal the 6-5 win an sweep of Hendrix College to wrap up Spring Break in positive fashion for Nichols.
Nichols (5-2) will return to Massachusetts on Sunday, and to Mitchell College on Tuesday, March 18. First pitch is set for 3:00 p.m.
