Hampden-Sydney Sweeps ODAC Doubleheader Past Guilford (NC) 3-1, 10-9

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. -- Freshman left-hander Noah Lewis (Crewe) pitched a complete-game victory in the first game with a career-high 15 strikeouts, the third-highest total in NCAA Division III this season, while junior right fielder and team captain Chase Sanford (Mechanicsville) had four hits and four RBIs in the second game, and junior center fielder and team captain Jack Wilson (Petersburg) added two hits, including a home run, to lead Hampden-Sydney College to a sweep of an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) baseball doubleheader at home past Guilford (NC) College on Saturday afternoon on Yank Bernier Field at the Ty Cobb Ballpark – Wurdeman Stadium. Lewis went the distance in the 3-1 opener with 12 of his 15 strikeouts swinging and three caught looking, the third-highest single-game total in NCAA Division III this season and believed to be among the best single-game efforts in program history, while junior right-hander Alex Fitz-Hugh (Chesterfield) gained the mound win in relief in the 10-9 nightcap for the host Tigers (9-9, 3-3) against the visiting Quakers (11-3, 2-2). The Garnet & Grey have won five-straight games.
 
In game one, H-SC scored three runs on eight hits with no errors … scoring two runs in the sixth inning and one run in the seventh. GC scored one run on six hits with two errors … scoring the run each in the ninth inning to avoid the shutout.
 
In the sixth, Sanford (2-4) doubled to right field to begin the at-bat and advanced to third on a wild pitch that was ball four to sophomore designated hitter Jake Moore (Dry Fork). Sanford scored on a fielder's choice RBI off the bat of sophomore left fielder Ian Martin (Martinsville) (1-4, RBI), and after Martin stole second and third base around a fly ball out, he crossed the plate on an RBI single to center field by senior shortstop Jaxon Masterson (Raleigh, NC) (1-4, RBI) for a 2-0 lead.
 
In the seventh, Wilson (2-4) doubled to right center field and advanced to third on a wild pitch, scoring when Sanford reached on a two-out throwing error for a 3-0 lead toward the two-run win in the opener.
 
Lewis (1-0) took care of the rest for the Garnet & Grey while earning is first collegiate pitching win. The southpaw started on the mound and went the complete-game distance of 9.0 innings, scattering six hits and one run, earned, with the career-high 15 strikeouts and only one walk. He struck-out the side in both the sixth and eighth innings, all six swinging, and had two strikeouts each in the first, second and ninth innings with the other strikeouts in the fourth, fifth and seventh innings, respectively. It's believed that the last Tiger to record 15 strikeouts was 2005 ODAC Pitcher of the Year John Schoenholtz '06.
 
In game two, H-SC scored 10 runs on 14 hits with four errors … scoring three runs in the first inning, two runs each in the second and fourth, and one run each in the fifth, sixth and eighth. GC scored nine runs on 10 hits with two errors … scoring three runs in the first inning and two runs each in the second, seven and eighth.
 
In the first, senior first baseman and team captain Grayson Harris (Moseley) (2-4) singled to right field with one out, advanced to second on a single up the middle by junior third baseball Matthew Arnold (Danville) (2-4, RBI), and both Harris and Arnold scored when Sanford (4-5, 4 RBIs) followed with a two-run triple to right field. Sanford crossed the plate on a ground ball RBI off the bat of Martin (1-4, 2 RBIs) to tie it at 3-3.
 
In the second, Masterson (2-4, RBI) singled to center field to begin the at-bat and advanced to second on a one-out single to center field by Wilson (2-4, RBI), and the bases were loaded after a walk to Harris with Masterson scoring on the play courtesy of a throwing error. Wilson and Harris each advanced a base on a wild pitch, and Wilson crossed the plate on a sacrifice fly RBI to right field by Arnold to tie it at 5-5.
 
In the fourth, Wilson hit a solo home run to left field with one out followed by a double down the right field line by Harris, and Harris later scored on a two-out, RBI single to right field by Sanford for a 7-5 advantage. The homer by Wilson was the Tigers' first home run of the season.
 
In the fifth, junior designated hitter Greer Farr (Southern Shores, NC) (1-1) singled to center field with one out, stole second base and scored on a two-out, RBI single to right field by Masterson for an 8-5 lead.
 
In the sixth, Wilson drew a lead-off walk, advanced to second on a ground ball out and on to third via a single through the left side by Arnold, scoring when Sanford followed with an RBI single to right center field for a 9-5 margin.
 
In the decisive eighth, Sanford doubled to right field with two outs and advance to third on the play courtesy of a throwing error. He scored on an RBI single down the left field line by Martin which proved to be the game-winning hit and run … providing for the 10-9 triumph.
 
Senior right-hander Gavin Gregory (Suffolk) started on the mound and pitched the first 3.0 innings, allowing six hits and five runs, three earned, with three strikeouts and one walk. Junior right-hander Sterling Austin (Petersburg) tossed 3.1 innings, scattering two hits and two runs, both earned, with four strikeout and no walks. Fitz-Hugh (2-1) pitched the final 2.2 innings for the win, yielding two hits and two runs, unearned, with five strikeouts and no walks. The trio of Tigers combined for 12 strikeouts in the nightcap, as the pitching staff totaled an impressive 27 strikeouts on the day.
 
H-SC remains at home to welcome nationally-ranked ODAC opponent the University of Lynchburg on Wednesday, March 19, at 4 p.m. at the Ty Cobb Ballpark – Wurdeman Stadium. Please note that a scheduled contest with Marymount University on Sunday, March 16, has been postponed and will be rescheduled for a later date this season.
