Marietta loses to Washington and Jefferson 6-1

WASHINGTON, Pennsylvania — The Marietta College baseball team lost its third straight game as Washington and Jefferson College defeated the Pioneers, 6-1, Wednesday (Mar. 19) evening. The Pioneers slip to 9-7 overall, while the Presidents improve to 8-4 on the season.
 
Washington and Jefferson scored five runs in the middle three innings to come from behind and defeat the Pioneers. Marietta took the early lead with its lone run in the top of the third inning. Evan Wilson reached on an error, was sacrificed to third and scored on a double from Jeremy Tonelli.
 
The Presidents tied the game in the bottom of the fourth. Jacob LaDuca led off with a double and moved to third on a ground out. Drew Garth doubled to centerfield scoring LaDuca.
 
Marietta starting pitcher Luke Czarnomski threw 4.0 strong innings allowing one run on two hits with a walk and six strikeouts. Forrest Havanis (2-1) started the fifth and was tagged with the loss after allowing two runs on three hits in 1.0 inning.
 
Brennan Stobbs pitched the sixth inning and gave up two unearned runs on no hits. He walked two and struck out one. Jacob Rocky worked an innings of shutout relief and Cooper Fiehrer allowed one run on two hits in the eighth inning.
 
W&J grabbed the lead in the bottom of the fifth. Luke Alvarez drove in the winning run with a double to left center. LaDuca knocked in Alvarez with a single to center. The Presidents scored a pair of unearned runs in the sixth without the benefit of a base hit. An RBI single from Knox Meier in the eighth made it 6-1.
 
Erik Streussnig (2-0) started on the mound for the Presidents and got the win after throwing 6.0 innings of three-hit ball. He allowed one unearned run, walked one and struck out three. Justin Giarrusso retired all three batters he faced in the seventh, while Brendan Cruz faced just six batters in the final two innings.
 
Tonelli had a double in the game for Marietta, while Diego DeCello and Fiehrer each had a single.
 
Marietta opens Ohio Athletic Conference play this Saturday (Mar. 22) when the Pioneers host the University of Mount Union. Game one of the doubleheader begins at 4:00 p.m.
