Baseball Drops Doubleheader to Southern Virginia

Rocky Mount, NC - The N.C. Wesleyan baseball team was unable to hold off Southern Virginia in a Saturday doubleheader, falling 8-7 in extra innings in game one and 22-8 in game two at Bauer Field.

Game 1: Southern Virginia 8, N.C. Wesleyan 7 (10 Innings)

The Battling Bishops took an early lead with a first-inning RBI single from Jacob Trivette. After Southern Virginia tied it in the fourth, Javier Quintana responded with a two-run homer to give Wesleyan a 3-1 lead.

Wesleyan looked in control after a four-run sixth inning, highlighted by a three-run home run from Jackson Hobbs, pushing their advantage to 7-3. However, Southern Virginia chipped away, scoring a run in the seventh and three more in the eighth, aided by passed balls. In the 10th inning, the Knights sealed the win with an RBI single from Seth Hall.

Preston Workman pitched six strong innings for Wesleyan, allowing just two earned runs with three strikeouts. Colby Lewis (1-2) took the loss in relief.

Game 2: Southern Virginia 22, N.C. Wesleyan 8 (8 Innings)

The second game saw Southern Virginia erupt offensively, tallying 23 hits en route to a lopsided victory. Wesleyan struck first, scoring in the opening frame on a wild pitch, but the Knights answered with two runs in the third before breaking the game open with a six-run fifth inning.

Despite a six-run rally by the Bishops in the seventh, led by another Quintana homer and RBI hits from Malachi Hayes and Maison Nance, Southern Virginia continued to pile on, scoring eight runs in the eighth to put the game out of reach.

Nathaniel Volk (0-4) took the loss for Wesleyan, while Carter Bybee (1-2) earned the win for the Knights.
