Shanahan Notches Second Save for RMC Baseball at YCP

YORK, Pa. – Junior Connor McAuley (Haymarket, Va./Highland) and senior Michael Shanahan (Fredericksburg, Va./Massaponax) both tossed two scoreless innings in relief as the Randolph-Macon baseball team outscored York (Pa.) 11-8 on Thursday afternoon.

The Basics

Score: Randolph-Macon 11, York (Pa.) 8

Venue: Jaquet Field

Records: RMC 12-7, YCP 9-10

How It Happened:

  • The Yellow Jackets had a two-out rally in the top of the first. Junior Carter Schmitt (Glen Allen, Va./St. Christopher's) singled to center and scored on a double to left center by senior Aaron Lautenschlager (Purcellville, Va./Loudoun Valley) to give the visitors a 1-0 edge.
  • The Spartans put up two unearned runs in the bottom of the first before RMC put together another two-out rally in the second. Junior Elias Brooks (Glen Allen, Va./Glen Allen) singled and went to second when freshman CJ Chatterton (Rockville, Md./Georgetown Prep) reached on an error. Both runners moved up on a wild pitch and Brooks came home on a base hit by sophomore Jon Quici (Paoli, Pa./Conestoga) to level the score at 2-2. A single by freshman Mason Bodnar (Arlington, Va./St. John's Prep) plated Chatterton as RMC took a 3-2 lead.
  • York put up three in the second before the Yellow Jackets answered with another two-out rally in the fourth. Quici singled, went to second on a wild pitch and scored on a base hit by Bodnar as RMC pulled within one at 5-4.
  • The Spartans expanded their lead with three in the fifth before RMC put up its own crooked number in the sixth. Junior Logan Duff (Forest, Va./Liberty Christian) started the outburst with a leadoff homer, his second of the season. Brooks walked, moved to second on a single by Chatterton, went to third on an error and came home on a second error to make it 8-6. Quici hit a sacrifice fly to knock in Chatterton as the Yellow Jackets pulled within one at 8-7. Schmitt had a two-out double and scored on a single by Lautenschlager to tie the game at 8-8. Senior Chaz Harvey (Charlottesville, Va./Miller School) doubled to drive home Lautenschlager and give RMC a 9-8 advantage.
  • After McAuley retired York in order in the sixth with a pair of strikeouts, the Yellow Jackets added to their lead in the seventh. Duff reached on an error and was sacrificed to second by Brooks. After a walk to Chatterton, Quici singled to bring home Duff to make it 10-8. A base hit by Bodnar brought in Chatterton to extend the lead to 11-8.
  • McAuley pitched a scoreless seventh and Shanahan did not allow a run over the final two frames to record his second save of the season in the 11-8 victory.
