Stevens outlasted FDU-Florham 6-4 in 10 innings

Madison, N.J. – The Stevens Institute of Technology baseball team outlasted FDU-Florham 6-4 in 10 innings during their Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom series opener on Friday afternoon.

Kieran O'Brien went 2-for-3 with three RBIs for Stevens (11-9), while Aaron Santos homered for FDU (8-13).

HOW IT HAPPENED
Neither side registered a hit until the third inning, with Stevens being held hitless until the fifth when they threatened to score. O'Brien led off after being hit by a pitch before Colby Ching and Frank Tonina tallied infield hits. However, FDU pitcher Eddie Appollina retired the next three batters to escape the jam. The Devils broke through with three runs in the bottom of the sixth. Jack Giovenco was hit by a pitch, and two batters later, Santos sent a 2-2 pitch over the left-field fence. Xavier Diaz tripled on the next pitch before scoring on a single to center.

Stevens cut the deficit to two in the seventh when O'Brien worked a five-pitch walk. After advancing to second on a wild pitch, Victor Schilleci singled to right, plating O'Brien.
The Ducks evened the score in the top of the eighth, putting up two runs on two hits. Liam DeRubertis walked with one out before Luke Mahala laced a double to right-center, putting runners on second and third. O'Brien then singled on the first pitch of the at-bat, scoring both runners. Neither side was able to push across another run in regulation, sending the game to extra innings.

In the 10th, DeRubertis doubled down the left-field line with one out and advanced to third when Quinton Sterling reached on an error by the first baseman. O'Brien once again delivered the big hit, singling to left. After a double steal moved runners to second and third, Ching executed a squeeze bunt to score another run, making it 5-3. Tonina capped off the frame with a sacrifice fly to center, extending the lead to 6-3. FDU battled back in the bottom of the 10th, scoring a run on a bases-loaded walk. However, David Finch worked out of the jam by inducing a game-ending 6-4-3 double play.
