WORCESTER -- Northboro, MA --- The WPI baseball team swept a doubleheader against visiting Plymouth State on Saturday, taking a tight game one 2-1 before rolling to a 12-1 win in the nightcap. The Engineers improve to 10-8 on the season, while the Panthers drop to 3-9.
GAME ONE
WPI rallied late to edge Plymouth State 2-1 in a tightly contested opener.
Jacob Wiberg (Exeter, NH) sparked the offense with two hits and an RBI, while Tommy Burns (Morris Plains, NJ) drove in the game-winning run with a sixth-inning single. James DiGiovanni (Kennebunk, ME) tripled and scored a run, and Matt Shea (Andover, MA) reached base and scored.
D.C. Brown (Plymouth, MA) turned in a strong start on the mound, allowing one unearned run over five innings while striking out eight. Brian Riley (Portland, ME) earned the win with two scoreless innings of relief, striking out two.
For Plymouth State, Jackson Curtis (Jefferson, NH) collected two hits, and Josh Worthington (Pownal, VT) scored the Panthers' lone run in the fifth on a sacrifice fly by Luke Sokolski (Waterford, CT). Starting pitcher Alex Noel (Dover, NH) was solid despite taking the loss, allowing two earned runs on six hits over six innings while fanning five.
Plymouth got on the board first in the fifth, when Worthington reached on an error and came home on Sokolski's sacrifice fly to right. WPI answered in the bottom of the sixth: Wiberg's RBI single tied the game, and he came around to score the go-ahead run on a Burns single to center.
GAME TWO
The WPI offense exploded in game two, scoring 12 runs across the first four innings to cruise to a 12-1 win.
Burns continued his big day with two hits, including a triple, and three RBIs. Jack Zawacki (Pittsford, NY) went 3-for-3 with two RBIs and a double, and Gavin George (Salem, NH) scored twice and added an RBI. Jonathan Lattimer (Windsor, CT), Spencer Merrick (Abington, MA), and Zachary Roethlein (Pomfret Center, CT) also drove in runs.
Alex Hee (Walpole, MA) picked up the win, limiting Plymouth State to one run over five innings. He scattered six hits and struck out three. Gage Nagy (Monroe, WA) and Eric DePiero (Beverly, MA) each added a scoreless inning of relief.
Plymouth State's only run came in the first inning on another sacrifice fly from Sokolski, scoring Worthington. Jason Smith (Charlestown, MA) took the loss, surrendering nine earned runs in 3.1 innings of work.
WPI pulled ahead quickly with two runs in the first, then tacked on three more in the second on RBI hits from Zawacki and Burns. The fourth inning saw the Engineers send 11 batters to the plate, highlighted by Burns' two-run triple and George's fielder's choice RBI.
Up next, WPI returns to action Tuesday for a 3:30pm NEWMAC game at home against Wheaton. Plymouth State heads to Colby on Wednesday for a 4:00pm non-conference matchup.
