DUDLEY, Mass. (3/29/2025) – The Nichols College Baseball team earned a split on Saturday afternoon against Roger Williams University in Conference of New England (CNE) play. The Bison won game one, 3-1, before dropping game two, 5-2.
Senior Luis Vargas recorded two RBIs in the win of game one. Senior Ben Jerome record three hits over the pair of games to lead the Bison.
Game 1: Nichols 3 Roger Williams 1
In a fast-paced game, the Bison opened the scoring in the bottom of the second inning. Senior Karl Miller doubled to open the inning and advanced to third on a ground out. Vargas grounded out as well and Miller scored to take a 1-0 lead.
Neither team found any traction, until Roger Williams scored in the top of the seventh inning. The game stood tied 1-1 headed into the bottom of the seventh inning. In the bottom half of the inning, a walk and hit-by-pitch, and a double steal, placed runners at second and third with one out. Vargas once again hit a chopper and Miller was able to dive under the tag and score to make it 2-1. A passed ball scored the third Bison run and Nichol took a 3-1 lead into the eighth inning.
The Bison turned to senior Tyler Moniz-Witten out of the bullpen, and he grabbed the next two outs in the eight after Steed stranded a runner in 7.1 innings of work. I the ninth inning, Moniz-Witten allowed a runner to reach before striking out the final batter to grab the 3-1 Bison win.
Steed (4-1) threw 7.1 innings, allowing one run on five hits, and saw him fan eight Hawk batters in the win. Moniz-Witten (1) earned his first save of the season, throwing 1.2 innings, while allowing no runs and striking out one to secure the save.
Game 2: Nichols 2 Roger Williams 5
The second game was more of the same from both these teams. The Hawks opened the scoring in the first inning and held a 1-0 lead into the sixth inning, before Nichols tied the game on a sac-fly from freshman Ryan Keating.
Roger Williams added another run in the top of seventh and the Bison answered with another run of their own in the bottom half of the inning. Senior Andrew Croteau singled through the right-side scoring teammate Stan Cipkas.
It was the Hawk, who had the final answer with three runs scoring in the top of the ninth, to earn the split over the Bison, with a 5-2 final.
Sophomore Allen Hinckley earned the start, throwing 6.2 innings, allowing two runs and striking out seven batters in the game. Freshman Andrew Csordos (0-1) shouldered the loss, in 1.0 innings pitched, allowing three runs on two hits.
Nichols (8-8, 1-3 CNE) will remain at home, as they welcome Massachusetts Maritime Academy to the Nichols College Baseball field on Monday, March 31. First pitch is set for 3:00 p.m.
