Baseball Takes Series from USA South-Leading Methodist, Splits Sunday Doubleheader

Rocky Mount, NC - The N.C. Wesleyan baseball team made a statement Sunday afternoon, taking down USA South leader Methodist in a high-powered doubleheader at Bauer Field. The Bishops earned a decisive 12-3 victory in game one before falling 10-4 in the series finale to secure a pivotal series win.

In the opener Sunday, the Bishops set the tone early and finished with an offensive explosion, highlighted by a nine-run eighth inning to break open what had been a tight 3-3 contest.

Colin Scoggins launched a two-run homer in the first inning, while Jackson Hobbs added a solo shot in the sixth to give Wesleyan a 3-2 lead. After Methodist tied it up in the eighth, the Bishops erupted with clutch hits across the lineup. Hobbs sparked the rally with a go-ahead RBI single, and Scoggins capped the inning with a bases-clearing double, finishing the game with five RBIs and three hits.

Hobbs scored four runs and reached base four times, and Jackson Ellyson chipped in two RBIs as part of a 12-hit attack. Preston Workman earned the win in relief, tossing 1.2 scoreless innings with a strikeout after a solid 7.1-inning start from Drake Hobgood.

In game two, the Bishops jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning, taking advantage of an error and RBI singles from Scoggins and Brady Williams. Methodist clawed back with two unearned runs in the third and tied it in the fifth.

Scoggins again delivered in the fifth with an RBI single to put Wesleyan up 4-3, but a six-run eighth inning by the Monarchs swung momentum away from the Bishops. Methodist capitalized on a homer, two-run single, and a Bishop error to break the game open.

Scoggins finished the doubleheader with five hits and seven RBIs. Javier Quintana scored twice in the nightcap, while Maison Nance doubled and walked.
