Hampden-Sydney Wins On The Road At Virginia Wesleyan 11-1

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. -- Senior shortstop Jaxon Masterson (Raleigh, NC) had three hits and two RBIs, junior right fielder and team captain Chase Sanford (Mechanicsville) had one hit and two RBIs, while senior first baseman and team captain Grayson Harris (Moseley) and sophomore catcher Noah Leonard (Troutville) each had two hits and one RBI, to lead Hampden-Sydney College to an 11-1 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) baseball road win at Virginia Wesleyan University on Wednesday afternoon in Virginia Beach. Freshman left-hander Noah Lewis (Crewe) pitched the first 5.2 scoreless innings with 11 strikeouts to earn the important pitching victory for the visiting Tigers (17-18, 9-11) against the host Marlins (10-18, 6-14).

H-SC scored 11 runs on 14 hits with two errors … scoring two runs each in the first and third innings, three runs each in the seventh and eighth, and on run in the ninth. VWU scored one run on eight hits with three errors … scoring the lone run in the seventh inning to avoid the shutout.

In the first, junior designated hitter Matthew Arnold (Danville) (2-4) singled to center field with one out, advanced to second on a passed ball with two outs, and scored when sophomore left fielder Jake Moore (Dry Fork) (1-5, RBI) provided an RBI single to center field. Moore then stole second base and advanced to third on another passed ball, and crossed the plate on a run-scoring single through the right side by Sanford (1-3, 2 RBIs) for an early 2-0 advantage.

In the third, Harris (2-4, RBI) singled up the middle to open the frame, stole second base and advanced to third on a ground ball out. Sanford was then hit by a pitch, with Harris scoring on a throwing error during a failed pick-off attempt at first base, and Sanford moved to second when sophomore third baseman Jase Howell (Portsmouth) (1-4, RBI) was hit by a pitch, as well. Masterson (3-5, 2 RBIs) followed with an RBI single to right field to plate Sanford for a 4-0 lead.

In the seventh, Arnold doubled to left center field to begin the at-bat, and after Harris was hit by a pitch, both runners advanced on a ground ball out. Arnold then scored on a sacrifice fly RBI to left field by Sanford, and Harris crossed the plate when Howell followed with a two-out RBI double down the right field line … and Howell crossed the plate when Masterson added a run-scoring double to left field for a 7-0 advantage.

In the eighth, Leonard (2-4, RBI) reached on a throwing error to open the frame, advanced to third on a double to left field by junior center fielder and team captain Jack Wilson (Petersburg) (1-5), and scored on a sacrifice fly RBI to center field by Arnold. Wilson then scored when Harris followed with an RBI single to left field, and Harris was on third base after a pair of steals, crossing the plate when Sanford reached on a fielding error with two outs … for a 10-1 lead.

In the ninth, Masterson singled to left field to begin the at-bat, advanced to second on a ground ball out, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on an RBI single up the middle by Leonard for an 11-1 margin of victory.

Lewis (3-1) started on the mound for the Garnet & Grey and pitched the first 5.2 scoreless innings for the victory, scattering four hits with 11 strikeouts and four walks. Junior right-hander Sterling Austin (Petersburg) tossed 1.1 innings of middle relief, allowing two hits and one run, unearned, with no strikeouts and no walks. Junior right-hander and team captain Alex Fitz-Hugh (Chesterfield) tossed 1.0 scoreless inning, yielding two hits with two strikeouts and no walks. Freshman left-hander Bobby Holihan (Yorktown) pitched the final 1.0 scoreless and hitless inning with no strikeouts and no walks.

H-SC is scheduled to play on the road at ODAC opponent Bridgewater College on Saturday, April 26, for a doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m. in Bridgewater. The Tigers are currently in seventh place in the conference standings with only the two games against the Eagles remaining in ODAC competition. The top eight teams in the league standings advance to the ODAC Tournament that begins on May 2.
