WORCESTER -- Clark erupted for seven runs in the seventh and tacked on five more in the eighth to surge past WPI 14-4 on Tuesday afternoon at Granger Field. The Cougars improve to 24-12 (8-6 NEWMAC) on the season, while the Engineers fall to 14-22 (2-12 NEWMAC).
WPI was led offensively by Tommy Burns (Morris Plains, NJ), who went 2-for-4 with a solo home run and a double. Chuck Cappello (Southboro, MA) also homered, while Jonathan Lattimer (Windsor, CT) collected three hits, including a double. Matt Shea (Andover, MA) and Jack Zawacki (Pittsford, NY) each drove in a run.
Starter Jacob Wiberg (Exeter, NH) was strong through six innings, allowing just two runs while striking out eight. Brian Riley (Hingham, MA) took the loss in relief after allowing five runs in the seventh.
Clark's offense was powered by a grand slam from Anthony LoCasto (New Rochelle, NY), part of a seven-run seventh that flipped the game. Michael Soares (Concord, MA) doubled and drove in two runs, and Brayden Hollinrake (Goffstown, NH) added three RBIs. Ryan Caulfield (Simsbury, CT) and Dom Mariani (Walpole, MA) also chipped in with run-scoring plays.
Tommy Flaherty (London, England) earned the win in relief, tossing 4.2 innings with five strikeouts and one run allowed.
WPI jumped ahead in the first when Burns launched a solo shot to left. Clark answered in the bottom half with a sacrifice fly from Soares to even the score.
The Engineers regained the lead in the third. Shea drew a bases-loaded walk and Zawacki followed with a sac fly to make it 3-1. Clark got one back in the bottom half on Mariani's sac fly, but Cappello restored WPI's two-run cushion with a solo homer in the fourth.
Clark's game-changing rally came in the seventh. After a Soares RBI double and an RBI walk by Hollinrake tied the game, Jalil beat out an infield single to plate the go-ahead run. Moments later, LoCasto crushed a grand slam to left center to cap the inning and make it 9-4.
The Cougars kept the pressure on in the eighth, scoring five more runs on a mix of singles, a wild pitch, and a Salzillo RBI infield hit to push the final margin to 14-4.
WPI returns to action Wednesday at 3:30pm with a non-conference game against Tufts. Clark travels to MIT for a NEWMAC doubleheader Saturday beginning at noon.
