Dunn, Davis pitch teams to victory

Seth Davis was in mid season form as he threw a complete game three-hitter to lead the Augustana Vikings to a 9-0 win over Brandeis to open the season on Sunday. Davis got all the runs he needed in the fifth when Augustana scored three times.

Trinity (Texas) finished off a three-game weekend series against the University of Dallas with a 12-0 shutout victory. Michael Walker (3-0) tossed six shutout innings to open the game, recording six strikeouts, and allowing just two hits.  Troy Nelson finished things off for the Tiger pitching staff, striking out two and giving up one hit in the final frame.

One shutout that effected a lot of games on Sunday was the weather.  More than half of the games scheduled were postponed or canceled. Some teams like Bridgewater (Va.) have has five of six games left unplayed due to adverse weather.

Christian Neal threw a complete game, allowing two runs (one earned) while striking out a program record 10 batters, as William Peace took down North Carolina Wesleyan, 5-2, recording their first win of the season and first-ever win in the USA South. At the plate, Matt Proctor and Trey Hogan collected two hits apiece.

Washington (Mo.) recorded 14 hits and nine walks, and scored nine runs in the final two innings to hold on for a 13-10 win in eight innings at Millsaps. The Bears broke open a 4-4 tie by sending 13 batters to the plate in a seven-run seventh inning to take an 11-4 lead.

Whitworth used a pair of five-run innings and totaled 17 hits in completing the series sweep over Schreiner with a 14-8 win in Texas. The Pirates scored 14 runs for the second consecutive game and eleven Whitworth hitters had at least one hit against Schreiner.

Taylor Dunn pitched five solid innings as the Bruins swept a weekend series with Pacific.

George Fox provided Pacific little chance to get the offense going Sunday as three Bruins' pitchers limited the Boxers to just three hits to complete the sweep of their Northwest Conference baseball series with a 4-0 win at Chuck Bafaro Stadium.  Taylor Dunn, Michael Hirko and Tom Zarosinski each allowed one hit and was backed up with a pair of two-run innings in the third and fourth.  Dunn earned the win, allowing the one hit and three walks while striking out three in five innings of work.

Alma made it to four wins in as many games with a pair on one run wins over Capital in Florida, winning 4-3, 3-2.

Moving to 5-0 on the season, No. 18 Birmingham-Southern defeated Transylvania, 9-5, at Striplin Field. Senior starter Paul Caudill threw five innings for BSC, picking up his first win of the year. Mac Crawford came in for the next two innings and struck out three Pioneers, followed by Wilson Jamison and David Bourbonnais for the final two innings.

Frostburg State raced to a 9-0 lead and never looked back in Sunday's 10-4 nonconference win over Guilford at Finch Field. The victory gave the undefeated Bobcats a sweep of the three-game weekend series with the Quakers.

Concordia (Texas) opened ASC play with a doubleheader sweep of Ozarks as snow fell at Lonnie R. Qualls Field. The Tornados won the opening contest 7-3 and picked up a 7-1 victory in the nightcap. Concordia posted 25 hits in the twinbill, including a pair of grand slams. In his first collegiate at-bat, freshman outfielder Caleb Maddox cleared the bases in the sixth inning of the opener to give the Tornados the lead for good. Junior infielder Adam Ortega then blasted a grand slam in the sixth inning of the nightcap to give CTX a 4-0 lead.

Ten Loggers touched home plate as Puget Sound's bats erupted in a 15-3 victory at Lewis & Clark. Puget Sound won two of three games against the Pioneers this weekend and amassed 29 runs on 41 hits. Connor Savage continued his torrid streak at the place and finished a double shy of hitting for the cycle. He hit 4-for-6 with four runs, three RBI, a triple, and his first home run of the season.

In their first Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) doubleheader of the season, the Cal Lutheran baseball team took game one 4-2 before falling 9-4 in the second game at Ullman Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Beneath gray, rainy skies the No. 8 Cal Lutheran baseball team returned to action against Puget Sound of the Northwest Conference. The home team took the only game of a scheduled doubleheader by a score of 7-3 despite heavy rains falling over the last three innings.
