Four top 10 teams get Saturday losses

Behind a four-hit performance from senior Jacob Mayfield and a three-RBI afternoon from junior Nathan Qualls, the 18th-ranked Birmingham-Southern baseball team defeated No. 23 Adrian, 9-3, Saturday afternoon at Striplin Field. With the victory the Panthers are now 4-0. Adrian broke into the win column with a 4-3 victory over Transylvania later in the day.

Keith Shumaker tossed eight strong innings and led the Majors to a 5-2 win over the eighth-ranked Webster Gorlocks at Twenty Field. Shumaker went eight strong innings, allowing seven hits and one walk while striking out four. Shumaker shook off a lead-off double and first-inning run to pick up his second win of the season.

George Fox used hefty offensive firepower to sweep the Northwest Conference doubleheader from Pacific, spoliing Boxer's head coach Brian Billings first home opener. The Bruins broken open a pitcher's duel with two runs in the seventh and scored all five of their runs in the final three innings to take the 5-1 victory in the opener.  An error with one out in the fifth inning opened the floodgates for the Bruins in game two as they scored nine runs in the frame en route to the 12-1 victory. Zach Rapacz did much of the damage for George Fox with five hits in the two games, which included a 3 for 5 performance in the nightcap.

Taylor Davis went 3-4 as Ferrum took the opener in USA South action 9-4 at Methodist. The Monarchs evend the series with a 8-5 win in the nightcap. Nick Norton earned the win for the Monarchs, pitching the final three innings with five strikeouts.

Johnny Peltz was 2-4 with three RBI in Wheaton's 11-6 victory over Southwester.

Wheaton (Ill.) recorded its first win of the young season with an 11-6 victory over the Southwestern Pirates. Wheaton rallied from an early 2-0 deficit with a five-run third inning and iced the victory with a four-run ninth inning to improve to 1-2 on the season.

Devon DeRaad went 3 for 7 and left the yard twice, and Nolan Watson struck out seven as the Occidental Tigers swept the Caltech Beavers 8-0, 5-2 at Anderson Field. DeRaad finished the day with four RBIs, three runs scored, and struck out one batter in an inning of relief pitching. The sophomore is on fire this year, leading the SCIAC with seven home runs in just nine games.

Oglethorpe split a doubleheader with a team from the Northeast for the second straight Saturday at Anderson Field, defeating the visiting Curry Colonels 10-3 in game one and falling to them 7-4 in game two.

Capital defeated Brandeis, 18-6, in its season opener. Sophomore Logan Bastin and senior Christian Ross each had three-hit days to pace a Crusaders offense that smacked 20 hits in one nine-inning game.

Trinity (Texas) opened a three-game weekend series by sweeping both games of a doubleheader against the University of Dallas, winning 6-5 and 7-3. The Tigers took advantage of four Crusader errors in game one, including a miscue that allowed the winning run to score in walk-off fashion. In the nightcap Brody Fehmel's two-run home run proved to be the game winning hit.

In their first SCIAC doubleheader of the season, Cal Lutheran and Chapman slit the two game set. The Kingsmen took game one 4-2 before Chapman responded with a 9-4 win in the second game at Ullman Stadium. Trey Saito picked up his second win of the season after pitching seven strong innings scattering seven hits and allowing just one earned run in game one. The Panthers opened up a 8-2 lead in game two and the bullpen pitched four scoreless innings to secure the win.

LeTourneau closed out its first ASC series with a 7-1 win over Louisiana College in Pineville. The YellowJackets were supported by a strong outing on the mound from junior Jordan Carns and an offense at the plate, who broke free for a season-high 14 hits in the win to secure the series.

Mary Hardin-Baylor bounced back for a game two win as the Cru salvaged a doubleheader split with Howard Payne in Belton. UMHB took game two 7-0 after falling 4-2 in game one.

Alma opened their season with a doubleheader against St. Joseph's (Brooklyn). The day was a good one for the Scots, as they swept both games from the Bears by scores of 8-4 in the first game and 4-0 in the nightcap. The wins gave the Scots a 2-0 start on the season.

Piedmont wrapped up their three-game series with visiting Covenant with a doubleheader sweep. Senior Daniel Lindsey catapulted the Lions to the series win with a walk-off hit in the bottom of the 14th in the second game. The Lions were 5-4 winners in the opening game despite being outhit 10-9.

The Rhodes pitching staff picked up a huge win with a 5-0 win over No. 3 Emory. Blake Glauben got the start, and his third win of the season. In the juniors' six complete innings of work, he struck out two batters and only allowed three hits. Daniel Morris finished the final three innings of play, earning the save while striking out three, only giving up one hit.
In their first Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) doubleheader of the season, the Cal Lutheran baseball team took game one 4-2 before falling 9-4 in the second game at Ullman Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Beneath gray, rainy skies the No. 8 Cal Lutheran baseball team returned to action against Puget Sound of the Northwest Conference. The home team took the only game of a scheduled doubleheader by a score of 7-3 despite heavy rains falling over the last three innings.
