Shenandoah moves to title game, Coast Guard moves on

Sophomore Kyle Jackson drove in a pair of runs and classmate Colton Cannon tossed a complete-game six-hitter as the fifth-seeded Coast Guard defeated fourth-seeded Babson, 6-1, in a NEWMAC quarterfinal on Friday afternoon at Govoni Field.

George Fox struck first, but Pacific Lutheran scored multiple runs in each of the final five innings as the top-seeded Lutes pulled away to a 16-4 win over the fourth-seeded Bruins in the opening game of the inaugural NWC Tournament. Pacific Luterhan will meet Whitworth who won 2-0 behind Dan Scheibe's no-hitter.

Scoring eight runs in the bottom of the seventh inning, sixth-ranked Birmingham-Southern defeated Centre, 10-0, in the opening round of the 2015 SAA Championship at Striplin Field. Ben Jernigan kept the Petrel offense quiet by tossing a complete game as Berry defeated the Oglethorpe Stormy Petrels, 10-3. Berry will meet the pantehrs in the winners bracket. The other half of the championship began in Jackson, Miss., In the first game, third-seeded and 21st-ranked Rhodes defeated sixth-seed Hendrix 13-2 in seven innings, and second-seeded and No. 17 Millsaps defeated seventh-seeded Sewanee, 14-0, also in seven innings. Millsaps and Rhodes will face off tomorrow, followed by Hendrix vs. Sewanee.

Top-seeded and No. 8 Shenandoah eliminated fourth-seeded Bridgewater from the 2015 ODAC Tournament with a 4-3 walkoff victory. Senior J.J. McDaniel drilled a one-out, bases loaded single to left center in the ninth to score Billy Arens from third with the winning run. The Hornets made it three wins in the tournament with a 3-2 win in 12 innings over No. 20 Randolph-Macon in a game pushed up due to Saturday's weather forecast. Earlier, Rick Spiers pitched the Yellow Jackets past Virginia Wesleyan with four-hit 5-0 shutout. Virginia Wesleyan will play Roanoke, a 5-1 winner over Eastern Mennonite, in the first game on Saturday.

With a three run seventh, Manhattanville took a one run lead and held it for a 7-6 win over No. 13 Misericordia and a trip to the Freedom Conference Tournament. The Valiants will be making their fourth consecutive appearance  in the Freedom Conference postseason tournament. DeSales trailed 10-1 after five innings and 13-4 after six innings but the Bulldog bench jump started the entire team as DeSales scored 12 runs over the final three innings to earn a miraculous 16-14 comeback win at Wilkes to  move the Bulldogs two games up on Misericordia for the race to earn the top seed in the Freedom Conference Tournament.

Kyle Dominy and Sean Kiley each went the distance on the bump and their offense backed them with 28 hits and 20 runs as the Oberlin swept the Hiram Terriers 10-3 and 10-1 at Dill Field. At the plate seniors Ryan Bliss and Klye Decker each had five hits as Decker has now hit safely in 28 straight games.

After being held scoreless in the first two innings of a CSAC game at Immaculata, Keystone put up runs in each of the final seven innings to pull away with a big, 15-5 victory over the Mighty Macs.  The Giants have now won their last four games and seven of their last eight contests.

Pinch-runner Jack Twitty scored a walkoff run for Hope as the Flying Dutchmen salvaged a doubleheader split with visiting Alma. Hope won the second game 4-3 at Boeve Stadium with Twitty crossing the plate with two outs in the bottom of the seventh. Alma took the opener 8-4.

The Alvernia offense racked up 17 base hits and the Crusaders broke a two-game losing skid with an 8-5 win over Arcadia in Commonwealth Conference at Arcadia. Senior closer Kevin Becker-Menditto earned his 13th save of the season and 44th of his career pulling within two of the NCAA Division III career record.

Senior left fielder Nick Papillo had four hits and six pitchers combined on a shutout as Scranton defeated Summit, 11-0, at Connell Park. Papillo finished 4-for-5 with an RBI and freshman third baseman Michael Ratner finished 2-for-2 with a double, two RBIs and two runs scored. Scranton scored five times in the first, once in the second, three times in the third and twice in the fourth while winning its fourth straight game and 11th out of its last 12.

Under a driving rain that plagued the final two innings, the (Wheaton (Ill.) Thunder came from behind to claim a 3-2 victory over Augustana in the first game of a crucial CCIW series. Wheaton is tied for the fourth and final spot in the upcoming CCIW Tournament entering the weekend.

Waynesburg took the first game of a three game series from Washington & Jefferson by a score of 18-10 in Greene County. The Jackets scored seven runs in the fourth and fifth to double their run total and take a commanding 14-3 lead and cruised to the win.

After being postponed numerous times over the last two months, Southern Vermont and Becker finally kicked off their three-game NECC series with SVC taking a dramatic 6-5 walk-off win at Epstein Field.

St. Scholastica used a seven run seventh inning to pull away from Northwestern (Minn.) in an otherwise tight game that ended with CSS on top 14-4 in eight innings.

Three weeks ago, New Jersey City University freshman left-handed pitcher Mike Ramirez made a memorable NJAC debut when he shutout Rowan for eight innings on April 4. His second career victory was impressive in its own right. Ramirez hurled his first career complete-game effort, allowing just one run and seven hits as NJCU defeated Stockton, 5-1, in game two of a two-day NJAC home-and-home series at the Thomas M. Gerrity Athletic Complex.

Sophomore Christian Ferri and freshman Tyler Weninger each rapped out four hits and sophomore Aaron Denis improved to 5-1 on the year as Wentworth Institute of Technology split a pair of CCC games at Eastern Nazarene. The Leopards snapped a four-game losing streak with an 11-4 win in the first game before the Lions earned the split with a 7-1 win in the nightcap.

Emory jumped out to leads of 6-1 after two innings and 9-4 after five, and eventually held on for a 9-8 victory over Piedmont in the Eagles' penultimate game of the 2015 campaign. Emory continued to make a push for a berth into the NCAA Championships, improving to 25-12 on the season with one more game left on the schedule.

Dominican snapped a ten-game losing streak, shutting out the Maranatha Baptist Sabrecats, 5-0. J.T. Hicks picked up two hits and drove in two runs in the win while Royce Salay picked up the win, tossing six shutout innings in his first collegiate appearance on the mound.

Hood's Josh Gall and Chris Shriver became the first players in school history to record five-hit games as the Blazers slugged their way to a 17-12 win over Lebanon Valley. Gall, who came up just a triple shy of the cycle, was 5-for-6 with a double, a homer and a school-record five runs batted in. Shriver was a perfect 5-for-5 with a double and four RBIs.
