Yeomen Take Care of Business Against Hiram

More news about: Oberlin

Oberlin, Ohio – Kyle Dominy and Sean Kiley each went the distance on the bump and their offense backed them with 28 hits and 20 runs as the Oberlin College baseball team swept the Hiram College Terriers 10-3 and 10-1 on Friday afternoon at Dill Field.

At the plate seniors Ryan Bliss and Kyle Decker each had five hits as Decker has now hit safely in 28 straight games. The duo combined four six RBIs as well. Classmates Andrew Hutson and Jeff Schweighoffer each drove in four as they collectively accounted for seven hits on the day.

With the sweep the Yeomen stopped a five-game skid and more importantly secured at least the No. 4 seed in the upcoming NCAC Crossover Series to give themselves a chance at a possible tournament berth the following weekend.

In the lid-lifter, the Yeomen staked Dominy to a 7-0 lead in the second as they sent 11 men to plate against starter Nate Weiss, who three weeks ago pitched a complete-game one hitter against the same lineup. However, the result was much different on this day.

Schweighoffer started the barrage with a two-run double to the gap in left center and Decker followed with a two-RBI double down the first-base line to make it a 4-0 lead. However, the Yeomen were far from done as Hutson roped an RBI triple before Benjamin Whitener delivered a sac fly to center. Bliss, who started the inning with a double, would then cap the frame's scoring with a single to right field.

Hiram, which was the designated home team for both games, plated its first run of the game on a passed ball in the bottom of the second.

The Yeomen would go on to add single tallies in the fifth, sixth and seventh to complete their scoring. Bliss, who was 4-for-4 in the game, doubled and scored in the fifth and would then add on an RBI single in the sixth. The final Oberlin run would come across on a single by Hutson in the seventh to score Justin Cruz.

Dominy ran into a little trouble in the sixth as four straight seeing-eye singles resulted in one run coming across.  Following a fielder's choice to score another run, the threat was short-circuited as catcher Eric Martin lined into an inning-ending double play.

With the win, Dominy improved to 4-1 on the year. He needed just 76 pitches, 51 of which were strikes to lock down the 21 outs needed for the complete game. He sprinkled seven hits and walked just one along the way.

In the nightcap, Kiley was absolutely dominant as he allowed just three and one unearned run to go along with four strikeouts for his fourth complete game of the year, but the first of the nine-inning variety. He tossed just 103 pitches with 76 going for strikes.

The Oberlin offense backed him with 14 hits with Decker, Whitener and Blaise Dolcemaschio leading the way with three each.

The Yeomen used a more methodical approach en route to their 10 runs in game two, with one run in each of the first two innings before adding two in the third and four in the fourth.

Whitener wasted no time in getting his strong second game going as he had an RBI double off the wall in right center in the first. Bliss started the second with a bunt single and would later score on Dolcemaschio's opposite-field double to the gap in left center. In the third, Decker would score on a first-and-third double steal and Bliss would then be retired for the first time of the day, but it was a productive out as Whitener scored on his sac fly to center to make it a 4-1 game.

The Terriers' lone run of the game came in the bottom of the first on Kyle Watson's RBI single to score Phillip Ward after he reached on an error.

The Yeomen would bust the game open with a four-run fourth and never look back.  Decker had a run-producing single and Hutson then followed with a two-run double to the gap in right center and would later score on an error.

Oberlin would add another run in the seventh on Schweighoffer's two-out RBI double to left center. He would go onto add his second RBI of the game with a sac fly in the ninth. The Yeomen third baseman now has 179 career hits, leaving him two shy of tying the all-time school record.

The Yeomen will conclude NCAC East play when they travel to The College of Wooster on Saturday and Sunday. The Scots, who ranked ninth in the country in the latest D3baseball.com Top Poll, enter with a record of 26-5 and 10-2 in the league. First pitch on Saturday is set for 11 a.m.
