Union opens season with sweep

Union started the 2020 season earning two wins against Purchase in a doubleheader at the RussMatt Invitational on Thursday. The Dutchmen started the day with a 5-2 win over the Panthers, before finishing off the day with a whopping 15-0 win. Chris Symington finished the day leading the Dutchmen, hitting 3-for-4 with two doubles, two RBI's and one run scored.

Matthew Hickey tossed six shutout innings to lead the Texas Lutheran Bulldogs to a 2-1 non-conference victory Thursday night against Pacific Lutheran. At TLU's Katt-Isbel Field, Hickey struck out six, allowed five hits, and worked around three walks. The sophomore left-hander improved to 2-0 on the season. TLU designated hitter Alex Cornman went 2-for-4 with a run scored, and Spencer Brandt and Collin Docker each drove in runs.

Christopher Newport surged past the previously undefeated Washington & Lee Generals on for a 10-4 victory at home. The Captains improved to 5-4 after erasing a 4-0 deficit in the middle innings with nine runs scored between the fifth and sixth inning.  Washington & Lee was saddled with it's first loss of the season, falling to 6-1.

New England College opened up the 2020 season with a 7-5, eight-inning win over Emerson, in non-conference action. Shaun Cormier picked up the win for New England College, as the junior went 5.0 innings and allowing no earned runs. Dylan Champagne started the game striking out three batters over two innings. BJ Minarcin and Jamie Carey had two hits on the day. Joe Maestu had 3 RBI in the contest. This was the 9th meeting all-time. New England College leads the series 6-3.

In the first-ever meeting between the two programs, Castleton earned a 3-2, 11 inning win over Cabrini at the Lake Myrtle Sports Complex. The Spartans, led by Davis Mikell, extended their winning streak to four games and improve to 4-2 while the Cavaliers fall to 3-4. Mikell ended the day 3-for-5 with the game winning RBI.

Kalamazoo opened the 2020 season with an 18-12 win at Whittier. Kalamazoo pounded out 24 hits in the game compared to 16 by Whittier. Doug Propson tied a school record for the Hornets with six hits in the leadoff spot as the sophomore finished 6-for-7 with two doubles, an RBI, and three runs scored. After starting at third base, Propson moved to the mound in the bottom of the eighth and recorded the final five outs of the game to earn the save. Blake Bean was 4-for-6 with a home run, a double, three RBIs and three runs scored. Ben Chosid also went 4-for-6 with three RBIs, two runs scored, and a stolen base. Parker Sisovsky picked up the win on the mound in five innings of work.

Clark used a 12-run seventh inning to separate from Keene State, riding the momentum toward a 15-4 non-conference victory over the Owls at Granger Field. The Cougars plated their highest run total of the season with 15 runs with 12 of coming in the seventh inning – the most in one inning since Clark scored 11 during the first inning against Norwich on March 26, 2011. Senior captain Dylan Horn went 4-for-4 at the dish with a season-high two RBI and three runs scored while Andrew Thibault ripped a pair of doubles and finished the game with three RBI. Junior James Huber and sophomore Andrea Casabianca contributed to the hit parade with two hits and a double apiece while senior captain Derek Lefebvre added a triple.

The Capital Crusaders continued its successful spring break trip, downing NVU-Lyndon 14-4 in its latest contest, moving to 6-2 on the season. Freshman Garrott Kennedy led the offensive effort versus the Hornets driving in four runs while manning second base. Montgomery came on in relief in the fifth inning and pitched 4.2 hitless innings to slam the door on the Hornets. The freshman threw 43 of his 59 pitches for strikes, inducing eight groundouts in the process. The offensive production was a true team effort in this one, as eight players contributed at least one hit to the team's total of 10.

Cameron Lane drilled a two-run home run to right field and 10 Hornet pitchers combined for nine strikeouts as Lynchburg downed Greensboro 9-6 Thursday afternoon in the Hornets' 2020 home opener. Eight out of nine hitters in Lynchburg's starting lineup recorded at least one base hit on the afternoon as Parker Shaffer and Josh Gjormand led the way with two each. Lane and Gjormand led the day with two RBIs apiece while Lynchburg pitchers held The Pride hitless into the fifth inning and struck out nine.
