Husson opens NAC play with win

The Oswego State pitching staff allowed a single earned run in 18 innings on Thursday afternoon to lead the way in a doubleheader sweep of the Pioneers from Alfred State University.  Behind six strong innings from Anthony Van Fossen, they took game one by a score of 6-3 and Ronald Loomis shut out the visitors for five innings in an 8-0 victory in game two.

The Husson Eagles (1-4, 1-0 North Atlantic Conference) opened NAC action with an 8-0 shutout victory over the University of Maine-Farmington Beavers (0-2, 0-1 NAC) on Thursday afternoon at Hippach Field. The Eagles got off to a quick start and the offense kept going, piling up eight runs. The Eagles were led by Brandon Smith who hit the first Husson homer of the season and drove in four runs on the afternoon. Harrison Lendrum made his second collegiate start and went four innings while allowing three hits and striking out a pair. With the victory; Lendrum moves to 1-0 on the season and 2-0 in his collegiate career.

Cabrini nearly tied the program record for runs in a game as they erupted for a lopsided 28-13 victory over the hosting Gwynedd Mercy University Griffins this afternoon. The Cavalier offense touched home in seven of nine frames, while every starter tallied at least one base hit. Cabrini also set a new season high with 25 hits, while the pitching staff recorded their second game of the season in which they did not issue a walk. Sophomore Earl Kochel IV paced the offense as he marked the hit column a season high four times, including two doubles and a triple, as well as tallying a career best seven RBIs. Senior Steven Priest, fresh off being named the AEC Player of the Week, continued his hot stretch as he paired three hits, highlighted by his first triple of the season, with six RBIs.

Cortland, making its first road trip of the season, opened league play with a doubleheader sweep at SUNYAC East opponent Oneonta. Cortland (9-3, 2-0) won the nine-inning opener, 14-1, and held off a late charge to capture the seven-inning nightcap, 9-4. Cortland did most of its damage in two innings, scoring five times in the second and eight in the fourth to take a 13-0 lead.

A long day in northern New Jersey proved to be a profitable one for the Rutgers University-Camden baseball team. The Scarlet Raptors started their New Jersey Athletic Conference doubleheader at 3 p.m. and finished after 9 p.m., but the time was worth it as Rutgers-Camden swept Rutgers-Newark, 9-5 and 7-4. The sweep lifts the Raptors' record to 3-7 overall and evens their NJAC mark at 2-2. The Scarlet Raiders fall to 1-3 overall and in the NJAC. Junior Colin Carr (1-1) picked up the win, working 5.1 innings and allowing four walks, six hits and five earned runs. He struck out three. Junior Stephen Brady earned the save with 3.2 shutout innings, allowing two hits and two walks, while fanning two. Newark senior starter Michael Matusz also worked seven innings without being involved in the decision. He allowed five hits, two walks and three runs, only two of them earned. He struck out five.

The La Roche Redhawks' bats exploded in their season opener twin bill at Hilbert College Thursday afternoon. LRU defeated the Hawks 13-0 in game one and 16-2 in game two. La Roche is now 2-0 on the season. Starting pitcher Jake Seymour got the W in game one. In 6.0 innings pitched, he had seven strikeouts, no walks and no earned runs. Tyler Vargon came in to close the game in the seventh inning and struckout every batter he faced (3). Five different Redhawks recorded multiple hits and multiple RBI in game one as the Redhawks scored 12 runs in the third and fourth innings of the game. Austin Hoffman and Tristan Tinney led LRU with three RBI a piece. Jay Novak got things rolling in the first inning with an RBI single and LRU never trailed.
The Redhawks put up five runs in the fourth and eighth innings. Tristan Tinney started the game on the mound and got the win.

Junior left fielder Peter Cosentino blasted a pair of home runs and drove in five as Montclair State blanked The College of New Jersey, 9-0 in the first game of a home-and-home series at Ackerman Park on Thursday afternoon. Lefthanders Ben Levine and Brian Reiss combined on the six-hit shutout as the Red Hawks (9-3, 1-2 NJAC) snapped a six-game losing streak to the Lions (x-x) winning for the first time since an 11-4 victory in the 2016 NJAC Baseball Tournament. MSU also registered its first shutout since March 23, 2019, an 8-0 win against Oneonta.

Wilson College was in action Thursday as they faced off against the Nittany Lions of Penn State Altoona. The Phoenix (13-3, 2-2 CSAC) swept the Lions (4-8) by scores of 3-1 and 10-8 in an extra-inning thriller. Wilson notched three runs off eight hits with one error while holding their opponent to just one run on five hits with one error. Ivey earned his second victory of the season on his way to striking out eight batters in five innings. Cook led the charge offensively hitting 3-4 with two RBIs, one run, and one home run. Mason finished his game going 2-3 with one RBI, one run, and one homer. In thye nightcap, the Phoenix scored 10 runs on 13 hits with six errors while their opponents finished with eight runs on 11 hits with one error. Marrale finished going 1-4 with three RBIs and one home run, Husar went 2-3 with one run, one RBI, and a stolen base, and senior KJ Curry went 3-5 with four runs and a stolen base. Cook had himself a day, finishing game two going 3-5 with five RBIs, three runs, two homers, and a triple. All together Cook finished the series hitting 6-9 with seven RBIs, four runs, three home runs, and one sacrifice fly.

The #20 Rowan Profs pounded 13 hits, including three home runs, to defeat New Jersey City, 13-3, in NJAC action today, for its third straight win. Ryan McIsaac, Eric DiDomenico and Trip McCaffrey all homered for the Profs, who improve to 5-2 (3-0 NJAC). McIsaac went 2-for-4 with three runs and three RBI, while DiDomenico was 2-for-4, scoring two runs and driving in two more. Michael Manganella was 2-for-3 with a run and two RBI and Jason Bobiak came off the bench to go 2-for-3 with a run and RBI.

Worcester State University played a doubleheader against Fisher College today at Fraser Field, splitting the games one apiece. The Lancers won game one 7-6 but dropped the second 7-6. The Lancers started off strong in game one, exploding for a three-run first inning. Junior Jacob Deziel wrapped up the action with a double down the left-field line. The Falcons found themselves up 6-4 after six. Worcester State would then go on to squeak by with some late-game heroics. The second game was another high-scoring affair, but this time it was Fisher who ended up in the win column.
