Kalamazoo sweeps on Wednesday

Suffolk blanked Curry in the first five innings and managed to get three runs on the board prior to the game being called due to heavy rain storms to take a 3-0 shutout win over the Colonels Wednesday afternoon at Jack Vallely Diamond. Shawn Nosky (pictured) shoved his first complete-game shutout. The sophomore limited Curry to three hits and two walks with four strikeouts.

Kalamazoo College swept Olivet in a non-conference doubleheader at Woodworth Field on Wednesday. Kalamazoo won the opener, 8-6 and the nighcap 7-2. Each team had nine hits in the opener. Blake Bean, Doug Propson, and Ben Chosid each had two hits in the game. Propson drove in two runs while Chosid doubled and scored twice. In game two, Kalamazoo had seven hits in the game while holding Olivet to just two. Lukas Bolton was 2-for-2. Cooper Mills was 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI.

Nichols College swept its Commonwealth Coast Conference doubleheader, 8-3 and 14-9, at Western New England University Wednesday afternoon at the Nichols Baseball Field. Junior DJ Caron belted his third home run of the season and finished the opener 4-for-4 with four runs scored while graduate student Christian Naccari notched his fifth home run of the season and third in the last four games. On the bump, junior Brendan Duffy allowed two hits and one run over 5.2 innings of work to earn his second win of the season. He walked two and struck out a career-high nine. Sophomore Will Kleinhenz and freshman Ben Jerome each drove in three runs while graduate student Kyle Bouchard, senior Nathaniel Cormier, and freshman Tyler St. Onge each plated two runs. The Bison pounded out 15 hits and seven different Bison recorded at least one RBI. Sophomore Chase Rancourt came on in relief in the first and threw four innings of one-hit ball to record his first collegiate win. He walked two and struck out three.

Sophomore Cam Furman allowed two runs over a career-best 7.0 innings and senior Reece Yeargain went 3 for 4 with two runs and two RBI as No. 14 Randolph-Macon outscored Hampden-Sydney 14-8 in ODAC action on Wednesday afternoon. Yeargain went 3 for 4 with a walk, two runs and two RBI. He was a triple short of the cycle and had 13 putouts at first base. For Hampden-Sydney, junior Max Lipscomb and sophomore captain Ryan Boyce each had two hits and two RBI.

Augustana pulled to within a half-game of Millikin in the CCIW standings with a 10-6 win over the Big Blue Wednesday at Swanson Stadium/Brunner Field. Coach Greg Wallace's club improved to 20-5 on the season and 12-5 in the conference, while Millikin fell to 19-5 overall and 12-4 in the league. The Vikings snapped a 4-4 tie with six runs in the bottom of the fifth. Matt Ozanic reached on an error and scored the go-ahead run on a two-out wild pitch by Big Blue reliever Evan Lawrence. Griffen Pschigoda sliced a double down the right field line to score Matt Helms, who had walked. Jared Buzan came in from the pen and walked Alec McGinnis. Zachary Vrbancic followed with a pop-fly double that plated Pschigoda and McGinnis came home on a Millikin error. Michael Gattuso's RBI single made it 9-4 and Alex Simon capped the inning with an RBI triple to the gap in right center. Millikin cut the deficit to 10-5 with a run in the top of the sixth, but sophomore lefty Jacob Reusch came out of the pen and worked into the ninth, surrendering just an unearned run before closer John Hayes got the final two outs.

No. 19 Centenary extended its winning streak to four games on Wednesday night as the Gents defeated the Louisiana College Wildcats 11-8 in a non-conference game at Billy Allgood Field at Legacy Stadium. The Maroon and White jumped out early as they scored five in the top of the first inning. The Wildcats responded with a pair of runs in the bottom half of the inning and then the teams combined to go scoreless over the next four innings until Louisiana College scored three in the bottom of the sixth to tie the game at 5-5. The tie game, though, did not last long as Centenary scored six in the top of the seventh to open up an 11-5 lead. The Wildcats score the game's final three runs to get within three, but the Centenary pitching staff closed the door and seal the win. The Gents banged out 14 hits and drew five walks while only striking out three times. They also had three extra-base hits, stole a base, and hit two sacrifice flies.

Freshman Preston Irby became the first player in Eastern Connecticut State University baseball history to hit a grand slam in his first plate appearance as the Warriors unleashed a 16-hit attack in a 23-7 non-conference win over Western Connecticut State University Tuesday afternoon at Westside Field. Pinch-hitting in the No. 9 slot with one out and one run in in the seventh, Irby homered to left off sophomore righty Sam Capetanakis in his first at-bat in an Eastern uniform, plating Dean Slavin, Benjamin Ryan and Kevin Murphy. Sophomore Thomas Acevedo had led off the inning with a home run to left, Slavin was hit by a pitch, Ryan reached on an infield error, and Murphy walked to load the bases to set the stage for Irby's record home run. Eastern (19-2) had entered the game having equaled its second-best start after 20 games in program history and was rated first in New England and 23rd nationally. Irby's grand slam followed a second-inning grand slam by Holden White giving the Warriors two grand slams in a game for the first time in program history. Four Western (1-7) pitchers allowed six extra-base hits, walked 17 batters and hit three. Nine of the Eastern batters who walked or were hit by pitch came around to score.

Sophomore T.J. Constertina retired six of the seven batters he faced for a save and freshman Jake Porter's RBI single in the eighth inning plated the go-ahead run as St. Thomas scored a 5-4 win over host Gustavus for a split of Wednesday's key MIAC doubleheader in St. Peter. The Gusties (15-2) won game one, 3-1, using three unearned runs. The teams are tied at 10-2 in the MIAC race, 2.5 games ahead of third-place Bethel (9-5), which lost a pair to St. John's. St. Thomas (15-5) made the most of 11 hits on the day. Four freshmen had two-hit games at the plate for the Purple: Owen Best had a single and an RBI double in game one, while Max Moris, Sam Kulesa and Porter each had two hits in the nightcap.

Saint John's (Minn.) launched five home runs in a doubleheader sweep of Bethel, 8-0 and 5-4, on Wednesday, April 21, at Hargis Park. Junior catcher Ethan Roe hit two home runs in game one, his second and third homers in five at-bats going back to Sunday's 11-5 win over Augsburg, and senior Nick Penick pitched the complete-game shutout for SJU (17-8, 7-7 MIAC). Roe now has 11 home runs in 23 games this spring, which ties him with Brent Schloe for the second-most in an SJU season, one behind the record of 12 set by former teammate Joey Stock in 2019. The Johnnies came back from two, two-run deficits and crushed three homers in game two. Justin Winterfeldt spearheaded the Royals offense in game one collecting two of Bethel's five hits while James Woelfel in game two went 2-for5 with a couple RBIs.

DeSales University earned its fourth straight win rolling past King's College 8-1 in MAC Freedom action on a frigid evening that saw rain and snow fall during the game at Weiland Park. The Bulldogs broke the tie in the fifth on an RBI single from freshman Gavin Zavorski and RBI triple from junior Billy Scanlon and broke it open in the sixth plating four more runs. Junior Robert Lamm had a two-RBI single, sophomore Justus Darville an RBI triple, and Zavorski his second RBI hit of the night. DeSales added one more in the eighth as Scanlon doubled scoring Diaz who had tripled with one out. Freshman Jared Drake earned his first career win tossing five solid innings allowing just four hits and one run, striking out four. Junior Will Manley pitched two strong innings of relief striking out three. Zavorski, Sergio Diaz, Scanlon, Liam Kile, and Joe Grigas IV each had two hits in the win.

Behind season-highs in hits and runs scored, North Central College scored the final 12 runs of the game and ran away with a 20-8 win on Wednesday over Wheaton (Ill.) , extending its win streak to nine games. North Central (20-5, 14-3 CCIW) recorded 21 hits in the game, the most in a game since 2015, while taking advantage of five Wheaton errors to plate 20 runs for the first time since 2019. The Cardinals jumped out to an 8-3 lead but Wheaton (8-17, 4-13 CCIW) plated five runs in the bottom of the sixth to knot the score at eight. Re-gaining the lead with a run on a Luke Lehnen RBI-fielder's choice in the top of the seventh, North Central went from a tie game in the sixth to ending the game in the eighth, sending an astounding 17 batters to the plate to score 11 runs on 10 hits in the inning.

Concordia University Chicago (10-14) won a thriller at home on Wednesday afternoon over Concordia University Wisconsin (13-10) by a final score of 6-5 thanks to a strong starting performance from senior Cade Laudenschlager and a clutch walk-off knock from junior Matthew Uba. Gary Maynard tied the game with a sac-fly before senior Brody Mariotti was hit by a pitch to again load the bases. The opportunity was there for Uba, who ripped a shot down the line into the left field corner to win the game for the Cougars. It was the best outing of the season for Laudenschlager, who went a career-long 7.0 innings in the win. The senior allowed just one earned on six hits while striking out five and walking just two.

Sophomore right-handed pitcher Nathan Sanders struck out a career-high 11 batters as Brevard College (9-10, 3-2 USAS) split a USA South Conference doubleheader against Piedmont College (18-11, 5-3 USAS) on Monday afternoon at Gil Coan Field. Sanders, a native of Franklin, set down 11 Piedmont batters in six impressive innings of work, allowing just one hit while not surrendering an earned run, as the Tornados prevailed with the 4-2 victory.

The University of Northwestern St. Paul swept the University of Minnesota Morris Cougars, 8-2 and 8-0, on Wednesday night a road UMAC doubleheader. The Eagles improved to 5-1 in conference play with the series sweep. Owen Boerema was fantastic in a complete game performance. The sophomore held the Cougars to just four hits and one earned run while striking out 11 in nine-innings to earn his third win of the season on the mound. The complete game win is the second in as many starts for Boerema, who shut out UW-Superior last week with 12 strikeouts in nine innings. Bryce Crabb took the mound for the Eagles in game two, and followed up Boerema's gem with one of his own. The sophomore shut out the Cougars in his eight innings pitched, allowing just four scattered hits while striking out seven. Crabb did damage at the plate as well, going 3-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored. This followed a game one in which Crabb went 4-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored to go 7-for 9 with three RBI and three runs scored on the day.

Brandeis University graduate student Tim Lopez threw a complete game today, the first of his career, as the Judges defeated Anna Maria College, 9-1, in a five-inning baseball game called due to rain and lightning. The Judges improve to 10-3 with the win, while the AMCats fall to 12-7. Brandeis defeated AMC despite getting outhit, 9-5, as the Judges drew six walks and saw two hit batsmen, while Lopez did not walk or hit a batter. He struck out two and gave up nine hits, but only one for extra-bases, a solo home run by Anna Maria's Adam Twitchell leading off the third inning. Lopez improved to 3-0 on the season, winning his fourth-straight decision dating back to last year.

Saint Elizabeth University got a masterful performance on the mound and at the plate from senior John Capozzoli in an 11-0 victory to open a Colonial States Athletic Conference doubleheader with Clarks Summit at Diamond Nation on Wednesday. The Eagles then topped the Defenders, 12-7 in the nightcap. The Eagles (4-6, 3-5 CSAC) scored four in the third and four in the fourth to secure an insurmountable lead, as Capozzoli tossed a seven-inning complete game shutout, struck out four, and allowed just four hits. At the plate, he went 2-for-4 with a double and two runs. Sophomore Josh Koller had one of the best offensive outbursts in program history, as he was 3-for-3 with two home runs, a double, four runs scored, and a walk. After Clarks Summit (2-12, 1-9 CSAC) took a 6-1 lead in the top of the fifth inning of the nightcap, the Eagles responded with five of their own in the bottom half of the frame and two in the sixth to take a 8-6 lead. The Defenders got one run back in the seventh, but the Saint Elizabeth offense kept grinding, and added one run in the seventh and three in the eighth to secure the sweep.
