Furman, Yeargain Lead #14 R-MC Baseball past H-SC 14-8

ASHLAND, Va. – Sophomore Cam Furman (Midlothian, Va./Midlothian) allowed two runs over a career-best 7.0 innings and senior Reece Yeargain (Chester, Va./Benedictine) went 3 for 4 with two runs and two RBI as the No. 14 Randolph-Macon baseball team outscored Hampden-Sydney 14-8 in ODAC action on Wednesday afternoon.

How It Happened:  

  • The Yellow Jackets started the scoring in the first. Sophomore Ethan Iannuzzi (Chesterfield, Va./Cosby) reached on a two-base error and came home on a base hit by senior Mike Nickles (Stafford, Va./Colonial Forge) as R-MC went up 1-0.
  • The R-MC offense exploded in the fourth. Senior Jacob Selden (Lynchburg, Va./E.C. Glass) had a leadoff single and moved to third on a double by Yeargain. A groundout by senior Kevin Mooney (Williamsburg, Va./Jamestown) brought home Selden to make it 2-0. A bunt single by senior Shawn Nickles (Stafford, Va./Colonial Forge) drove in Yeargain to up the lead to 3-0. A fielder's choice by senior Ryan Duphorn plated a run, and other came in when Mike Nickles reached on error. junior Will Hass (Charlottesville, Va./St. Anne's Belfield) had a two-run double, Selden added an RBI single and Yeargain capped the nine-run outburst with a two-run homer over the scoreboard in left center as the Yellow Jackets took a 10-0 lead.
  • The Tigers tallied single runs in the fifth and sixth to make it 10-2. The Yellow Jackets got those runs back in the bottom of the eighth as Duphorn knocked in a run by reaching on an error and Iannuzzi delivered a sacrifice fly to push the lead to 12-2.
  • H-SC erupted for six in the top of the eighth to pull within four at 12-8. R-MC would add two insurance runs in the ninth. Sophomore Brooks Mazey (Glen Allen, Va./Deep Run) struck out and reached on a wild pitch. He would score on a wild pitch, and senior Jack Basse (Fairfax Station, Va./South County) had a sacrifice fly to make the score 14-8.
  • Senior Zack Radcliffe (Bel Air, Md./Bel Air) retired the side in order in the ninth with two strikeouts and an outstanding catch in foul territory by Mazey to end the contest.
