Shenandoah opens with sweep

Maryville made its first opening day at home in six years a smashing success with a doubleheader sweep of Eastern Mennonite on Saturday. Zac Graham, Hunter Thaxton and Gabriel Lopez all homered for the Scots in a 15-4 first game win, and then Graham cleared the wall in left for a second time during Maryville's 7-2 triumph in the nightcap.

No. 21 Shenandoah opened up its 2023 season Saturday with a non-league doubleheader sweep over Widener. Shenandoah (2-0) was a 13-2 victor in the opener before finishing off the sweep of the Pride (1-2) with a 3-1 victory in the nightcap. Coach Kevin Anderson's club banged out 13 hits in the game one victory with Kooper Anderson going 3-for-3 with four runs scored. Senior Jacob Faivre (1-0) pitched the first four innings to earn the victory. He allowed one unearned run on three hits and one walk while striking out eight. Jacob Bell (SV, 1) earned the save with three innings of relief. He struck out five and gave up one run on two hits and one walk. Reilly Owen and Tristian Everett combined for a one-hitter in the game two, 3-1, victory.

Even with an early start time, the bats were working
for LeTourneau on Saturday. With the start time
moved up an hour due to impending rain, LeTourneau
banged out 18 hits and took the final game of the
series with a 14-9 victory over Millsaps on Saturday
at Twenty Field in Jackson.

Howard Payne split its doubleheader 11-1 and 3-9 versus the St. Thomas (Texas) Celts. The Yellow Jackets were quick to get on the board in the bottom of the first inning and in the fourth St. Thomas struggled, making four errors which allowed the Jackets to score nine more runs, including a Grand Slam by Will Burford, making it a 11-0 game. The Jackets held off the Celts until the sixth inning, only allowing one run to come in. In game two, it was the Celts that scored first and used a four run sixth to put the game out of reach.

Millikin split a doubleheader at #24 East Texas Baptist in Marshall, Texas. The Tigers won game one 5-4, but the Big Blue rallied to take game two 3-2. Millikin rallied late to win game two. The Big Blue trailed 2-0 after six innings. Tommy Shaw had an RBI single in the seventh to cut the advantage to 2-1. The Big Blue took the lead with two runs in the eighth. East Texas Baptist University held off Millikin 5-4 in ganme one at Woods Field.

Four pitchers combined for the game two shutout as Chapman split a doubleheader to open a three-game series with Pacific. In a rematch of last year's NCAA Regional opener, the Boxers took game on 13-4 before the Panther pitchers dominated in a 3-0 shutout in game two. The victory iin the opener became lopsided for Pacific in the late innings although the Boxers never trailed in the game. Both teams had plenty of opportunities to put up more runs on the board but Pacific stranded 12 runners on base and Chapman left 11 aboard. The Chapman pitchers stole the spotlight with 17 strikeouts in a shutout of the Boxers in game two. Wyatt Thompson fanned seven over 3.1 scoreless innings. Freshman Graham Stogner followed with 2.2 hitless and scoreless innings that included four strikeouts. Anzai, who started the game as the designated hitter, was brought on to pitch and struck out four over two scoreless innings. Freshman Henry Chabot gave up a hit but struck out a pair in the ninth to earn his first career save.

Lewis & Clark bounced back from their first setback of the 2023 season with a 15-7 game two win to earn a series victory over Claremont Mudd-Scripps on Saturday afternoon at Azusa Pacific College. Saturday's opener was a role reversal of Friday's contest, with the Pioneers running out to an early lead and the Stags using a late comeback to hand Lewis & Clark their first loss of the season. The Pios responded by getting out to an 8-1 lead and continuing to add to their advantage in the rubber match of the three-game set.
Sophomore center fielder Brennen Davis had a huge day at the plate. He went 6-10 with three hits in both games and added five run, six RBI and a walk. Three of his six hits went for extra-bases, including his fourth and fifth home runs of the season.

Centerfielder Cam McNearney doubled off a Trinity (Texas) baserunner after catching a line drive in the bottom of the 10th inning Saturday, lifting fourth-ranked BSC to a 7-6 win over the Tigers. McNearney laid down a safety squeeze down in the top of the 10th against Trinity reliever Harrison Durow (0-1) to give the Panthers a 7-6 lead. Eli Steadman got on with a lead off walk before Ty Truett sac bunted him over to second. Dutton then walked and Steadman would advance to third on a wild pitch. McNearney then executed a safety squeeze to bring home the winning run. After a leadoff walk to start the ninth for Trinity, Davis Williams got the next batter to foul out. The very next batter hit a line drive to centerfield where it found the glove of McNearney who fired a bullet to first base, doubling off the Tigers baserunner and securing another victory for the Panthers.

Pacific Lutheran scored 20 runs on Saturday afternoon, earning a doubleheader sweep at Gardner-Boggs Field. The Lutes blasted Hardin-Simmons 8-3 to open the day before trouncing Texas Lutheran University 12-2. The Lutes (4-2) pounced early against Hardin-Simmons, piling on seven runs in the opening three innings. Hardin-Simmons scratched across a score in the eighth but it wasn't enough as PLU cruised to the 8-3 win. In game two, the Lutes piled on five runs in the third inning to overwhelm the Bulldogs to close out the day undefeated. "We had good energy and effort today," said Head Coach Nolan Soete.

George Fox won their first of two games against a Texas Lutheran team that's receiving votes in the D3baseball top 25 poll, winning 7-3, but lost the second game of the day to Concordia Texas, 3-6. The Bruins put up plenty of offense against the TLU Bulldogs in the win. In game two with a different opponent from Texas, the tables were turned as Fox had five runs scored against them in the first two innings by the Concordia Tornados.

Piedmont completed its season-opening series against Cal Lutheran earning the series win taking two out of three. The Lions dropped game two of the series 7-6 in 11 innings after a walkoff for the Kingsmen but bounced back with a 12-9 win to end the series. The Lions faced Cal Lutheran Friday afternoon in a game that was halted due to darkness and resumed Saturday in the top of the 11th. The Kingsmen were able to record a pair of singles and put two runners in scoring position after a sac bunt. A 2-RBI single up the middle provided the walk-off win for the home team to even the series. It was a fast start for the Lions in the final game of the series as the Lions led wire-to-wire. There were a total of six home runs in the contest as the Kingsmen hit five to Piedmont's one.

The Whitman Blues continued on one of their hottest starts in recent memory as they improved to 5-0 with a 9-7 and 12-5 doubleheader sweep of the Occidental Tigers Saturday in Los Angeles. Whitman took an early lead in game one and built a 5-2 through six. In the top of the seventh inning. Ben Parker and Garrett Runyan reach before righty Teague Conder, facing a lefty on the mound, got ahead 1-O, and took advantage of a hanging curveball, crushing it down the left field line for a three run shot to extend the Whitman lead to 8-2. Two batters later, Jack Bickerton took a belt high fastball and smashed it over the left field wall for a 9-2 lead. Occidental would not go away quietly but the deficeit was too large to overcome. In game two, Whitman built a 7-0 lead they rode to the sweep.

Averett opened its 2023 season with a thrilling 3-2 victory over Brevard that included a game-ending play at the plate to start a non-conference doubleheader Saturday on Owen-Fulton Field. Brevard edged the Cougars 4-2 in the nightcap to earn a split. In game one, Averett (1-1) led 3-1 entering the top of the ninth. Brevard (1-1), however, got a leadoff walk and a hit-by-pitch to put two aboard with no outs. After a sacrifice bunt moved both runners into scoring position, Logan Clark hit a deep fly ball to center field. The flyout to junior centerfielder Nolan Maccabe easily allowed Luke Morton to score from third after tagging on the sacrifice fly. Meanwhile, Blake Burchett tried to tag and score all the way from second on the play as well to try to tie the game. Yet, the relay throw from Maccabe to sophomore second baseman Caden Grider to senior catcher Kyle Wilson was on the money and the Cougars had Burchett out at home by three steps for the final out to preserve the win. In game two, Brevard took advantage of two run-scoring wild pitches in the fifth, then took a 3-2 lead on an error that would have ended the inning. The Tornados added an insurance run in the top of the ninth on an RBI fielder's choice.

Pomona-Pitzer split their doubleheader against non-conference opponent Willamette on Saturday afternoon at Alumni Field. The Sagehens won 2-1 in the opener and dropped the mightcap 9-4 to Willamette. In game one the Sagehens waited until the sixth inning to get the runs they needed but Caleb Millikan came up big with an RBI single to left field that ended up being trouble for the left fielder and the Sagehens were able to score two as Jakobs and David Bedrosian came around to score to put the Sagehens up 2-1. The Bearcats had a chance late to spoil game one of the doubleheader for the Sagehens after they loaded the bases in the ninth, but Woods was able to get out of trouble and slam the door shut for his first save of the season. The Bearcats started game two of the doubleheader with a run in their first at-bats after an RBI single gave them a 1-0 lead. This was a close as the Sagehens would get. Willamette put the game away with a four run eighth.

Dylan Joyce eclipsed 100 runs batted in for his career as Puget Sound won two games, 11-1 and 13-2, at Caltech. Dylan Joyce drove in two runs and drew three walks as the Loggers won the first game of the doubleheader, 11-1. He became the sixth Logger in school history to reach 100 career runs batted in – he currently has 102 after the doubleheader. Brett Harvey improved to 2-0 on the mound and the Loggers posted a five-run second inning on their way to a 13-2 win over the Beavers. The big inning included an infield single by Makana Murashige, and a two-run triple by Nathan Blocher.

Kean used a three run sixth inning to push past St. Joseph's University Long Island by the final of 4-3 o Saturday afternoon. In sixth, Kean scored what would be the go ahead and winning runs. The Cougars took advantage of two Golden Eagle miscues while recording three hits of their own. Phil Marcantonio tied things up with a sacrifice fly. Tyler Provost gave the Cougars the lead with an RBI double and later scored what would be the winning run on the second St. Joseph's miscue of the inning.

The University of Dallas opened a three-game series with Hendrix on Saturday. They split the doubleheader, losing game one 12-1 and winning game two 5-4. The Crusaders had the chance to strike first in the opener, but stranded runners on first and third in the top of the first. Instead the Warriors took the early lead with a lead-off homer in the bottom half of the inning. Hendrix continued to pile on, adding three runs in the second, three in the fourth, two in the fifth, and three in the sixth. Dallas had no answer in the top of the seventh, giving Hendrix the win via mercy. Once again, the Crusaders had the chance to get on the board first in game two. This time, they were thwarted by an outfield assist, as Tyler Darnell was gunned down at the plate for the third out of the inning trying to score on a double by Brett Castillo. The sense of déjà vu was deep in the first inning. Not only did Hendrix score first in the bottom of the first, again, but they were gunned down at the plate to end their inning as well after the throw in and relay by Caleb Hohman and Fernando Davila. The two teams traded blows giving Hendrix a 4-3 lead going into the ninth. In the top of the ninth, Mike Andersen and Darnell both singled with two outs, putting runners on first and third. Darnell promplty stole second, then Andersen came home on a passed ball to tie the game. David Saldana hit a pinch-hit single up the middle to bring home Darnell to give Dallas the 5-4 lead. Donnie Dycus held the Warriors scoreless in the bottom of the ninth to wrap up the game and secure his first win.
