Methodist and CNU cruises to opening week wins

The Emory Eagles picked up a win in its home opener Tuesday afternoon, defeating crosstown rival Oglethorpe, 7-4, at Chappell Park in Atlanta.

Methodist collected two wins over Alma in a non-conference doubleheader on Thursday to start the season 2-0. The Monarchs won both seven-inning games decisively – 10-3 in the first and 14-5 in the second. In game one, Methodist scored four times in both the second and third innings to cruise to the win. In the game, William St. Leger recorded the 100th strikeout in his collegiate career. In game two, Alma claimed an early advantage with three runs on four hits in the top of the second inning. However, the Monarchs quickly returned fire, scoring three runs of their own in the bottom of the inning and three more in the next. Putting the game away, the Monarchs batted all the way through their lineup in the fifth inning, producing seven runs on four hits as well as several pitching miscues by the Scots. Center fielder Jackson Deal led all hitters with a 5-for-5 game at the plate in Game 2 with a triple, homerun, four RBI and four runs scored.

The Rhodes Lynx improved to 3-0 on the season with a 10-1 victory over the MUW Owls In the only DIII game on Monday. Freshman Zac Sohosky took the ball for the second time this season, pitching six innings of 1 run ball, and collecting his first collegiate win. Offensively, the Lynx batters continued their mashing, putting up 7 runs in the fifth inning and another 3 in the seventh. The offensive outburst was sparked by Corbin Kinder's 1 out homer, clearing the scoreboard by several feet. The Lynx bullpen also continued their dominance. After Sohosky's 6 innings, Jaxon Cady, Chayton Gray, and Colby Slaughter all tallied scoreless innings, sealing the win for the Lynx. Rhodes fell to Christian Brothers on Wednesday 7-5 for their first loss of the season.

Mason Woodhouse blasted a two-run homer in the top of the eighth to give Austin College an 8-6 victory at LeTourneau University on Wednesday evening, as the 'Roos opened up their 2023 campaign with a non-conference road game. Austin College got on the board early pushed their lead to 4-1 lead in the third. LeTourneau evened things up in the seventh, with the tying run coming home on a wild pitch, but in the top of the eighth Woodhouse launched a two-run shot to put the 'Roos back on top 8-6. Gavin Brady and Kurtis Gustafson each hurled a shutout inning to seal the win.

With unseasonable temperatures hovering above 60 degrees, the Pitt-Bradford Panthers made the most of a beautiful day at the Kerr-Pegula Athletic Complex, defeating the Houghton Highlanders on opening day, 11-3. While the Highlanders struck first in the opening inning on an RBI double from Ian Slate, the Panthers would score single runs in each of the next four innings, then unload for four in the seventh and three more in the eighth. Four Houghton pitchers combined to walk 12 batters and hit a pair more, while the Panthers also rapped out 10 hits, including three for extra bases. Pitt-Bradford stole a total of six bases on the day, including four from Nico Hall.

Sophomore Jaxon Masterson had three hits, including a three-run home run, with four RBIs to lead Hampden-Sydney to a season-opening 6-4 non-conference road win at William Peace on Wednesday afternoon in Cary, North Carolina. Senior Ethan Currin added an RBI double, and senior captain Jay Beavers had two hits. Sophomore Gavin Gregory gained the pitching win for the visiting Tigers (1-0), while senior Tymothy Hart earned a save against the host Pacers (0-1). H-SC used nine different pitchers on the day, each on the mound for one inning.

Emory picked up a win in its home opener Tuesday afternoon, defeating crosstown rival Oglethorpe, 7-4, at Chappell Park in Atlanta. Senior Joey Bock earned the win in his season debut, spinning five innings of one-run ball while totaling three strikeouts. Senior Mike Golob and junior Tyler McLoughlin were locked down out of the pen in the final innings, combining for two scoreless frames and three punch outs. McLoughlin worked around a lead-off walk in the ninth inning to record his second save of his career. At the plate, five Eagles combined for nine hits with seniors Jack Masonis, Ellis Schwartz and juniors Steven Hunt and Jacob Grossman all tallying multi-hit games. Seven different players drove in a run while team went 5-for-5 on the base paths, led by Scwartz's three steals.

 Averett defeated Alma 3-2 in game one of the doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon. In the second game, the teams were tied 8-8 and the game was called due to darkness on Owen-Fulton Field. In game one, Averett (2-1-1) was tied up 2-2 with Alma (0-1-1) going into the bottom of the seventh inning. With two outs, it was up to sophomore Kevin Zischke to provide the spark that his team needed. He came through with a single up the middle to get a runner on board for the Cougars. Senior Kyle Wilson then drew a crucial walk to advance Zischke to second. Sophomore Gavin Colwell came in to pinch hit. After battling with the pitcher, he cracked a screaming double into the left field warning track to send Zischke home for the walk off win. In game two, Alma took the lead in the top of the first after a 3-run blast to left field to put them up 3-0 but needed an eight inning single to knot the score before the game was cut short due to darkness.

Christopher Newport got on the field twice mid-week, winning in their opener and again on Thursday. Christopher Newport senior Alec Reilly blasted a pair of home runs and the pitching staff combined to allow just two hits while striking out 16 as the Captains opened the 2023 season with a 5-1 win over Eastern Mennonite on Wednesday afternoon. Dylan Weber (1-0) led the way on the mound, striking out 10 while allowing just one run on two hits in the first start of the year. On Thursday,  Christopher Newport slipped past Marymount (0-1) with a timely home run by Justin Bowers providing the difference in a 6-5 win at Captains Park. Bowers' first blast of the season came in a tie game in the bottom of the 7th and was enough for closer Daniel Elliott to slam the door with two scoreless frames, striking out four to record his first save of the season.
