Wood no-hitter first for a Major in a decade

JACKSON, Miss. – Millsaps improved to 7-3 on the season after shutting down Westminster (Mo.), 3-1, 1-0 and 3-2 over the weekend at Twenty Field. In the late game on Friday Wil Wood threw a no-Hit, 16 Strikeout seven-inning game.

Graduate Wil Wood recorded the Majors' first no-hitter since 2014 when Nathan Harrel and James Perkins combined for a no-hit game. Wood tossed a career-high 16 strikeouts in only seven innings. The Memphis, Tenn., native faced 22 batters in the 1-0 victory over Westminster on Friday.

Graduate Branyan Bounds batted 2-for-2 with a walk offensively.

The Majors scored the only run of the contest in the bottom of the fourth inning. A pair of leadoff singles allowed senior David Abbadessa to score sophomore EJ Ousley from third with a sacrifice fly.

Wood recorded a strikeout in every frame struck out the Westminster side in the second, third and sixth innings. Millsaps claimed the 1-0 triumph in Game Two on Friday.

Juniors Bradley Pelle (two runs, stolen base) and Evan Scott (one RBI) both batted 2-for-4, while sophomore EJ Ousley and junior Gray Berry finished 2-for-3 with a double each on Friday.

Sophomore Stewart Bonnecaze pitched 4.2 innings with two strikeouts, two runs and one hit and six walks against. Redshirt sophomore Will Norris finished the final 4.1 innings with zero hits and no runs allowed, while striking out three batters.

Westminster tallied the first runs in the top of the second with a two-RBI single up the middle. A balk allowed Millsaps to shorten the Blue Jays' lead to 2-1 in the bottom of the fourth inning as Pelle advanced from third.

The teams would remain scoreless until the bottom of the eighth inning. A single by Pelle and pair of errors would send freshman Wes Grant, tying the game at 2-2.

A couple of batters later saw Scott single home Pelle to give Millsaps a 3-2 advantage.

The Blue Jays would try to turn things around in the ninth, but three consecutive fly outs to Pelle would end Westminster's hopes as the Majors would take Game One, 3-2.

Junior Nick Tarantino helped the Majors sweep Westminster with 3-1 decision to close out the weekend on Saturday.

Tarantino pitched a season-high nine strikeouts in six scoreless innings. The Covington, La., product only allowed three hits and two walks. Senior Jackson Hood recorded his third save of the season in 1.2 IP with two strikeouts, no walks and two hits against.

Senior Jackson Ware finished 2-for-4 at bat with an RBI and classmate Case Page recorded two RBIs in the sweep.

The Majors started off on fire in the bottom of the first inning by scoring three runs with two outs. Page advanced Berry and Pelle home with a two-RBI single through the right side of the infield.

Millsaps would add another run when Ware singled home Page from second after a passed ball.

In the top of the fifth, the Blue Jays had an opportunity to post their first run of the game with runners on second and third. However, graduate catcher Robert Vassallo alertly throw out the runner at third base on a pickoff to end the threat.

Westminster would cut the deficit to 3-1 in the eighth inning after a fielder's choice and throwing error advanced a runner from second base. Wood used a strikeout to end the eighth and begin the ninth to close out the Blue Jays for the 3-1 sweep.
