Hanover, Dickinson dominates on Tuesday

After having their season opener pushed back a few extra days Dickinson began the 2024 campaign with an offensive explosion as Kaden Sigmon led the way with eight RBIs in a 22-6 non-conference win over the Lancaster Bible College Chargers.

The Hanover Panthers (2-2 overall) opened the week with a 7-1 win over Eastern on Tuesday afternoon behind a solid performance from Chris Hautman on the mound. Hautman threw six complete innings of fantastic baseball surrendering just one hit with nine strikeouts. Junior Ashton Dickmann pitched relief for the Blue and Red throwing three innings with six K's. Junior Jake Danneman paced the Panthers at the plate going 4-for-5 with a run and an RBI. Sophomore Robert Carroll added a game-high two RBI on two hits. As a unit, the Panthers racked up seven runs on 11 hits with six RBI.

Behind season-highs in hits and runs scored, Washington and Lee ran away with a 16-4 win over Greensboro on Tuesday afternoon. The Generals (4-4) wasted no time in the first frame setting the tone of the game with a 2-0 lead. Paul Ramseur put the Generals up by 13 runs as he blasted a two-run homer to give W&L a 15-2 lead that put the game out of reach. W&L's offense produced a season-high 16 hits and 16 runs this afternoon, their most runs since they scored 19 against Averett on Feb. 16, 2022. Ben Sundell (1-0) earned the win after striking out a career-high five batters in his 4.1 innings pitched. The pitching staff held the Pride's offense who averaged 12.7 runs per game, to their lowest total of the season.

Dane Jones hit two home runs, Ben Jones added another solo shot, and Riley Davis tossed five shutout innings as LeTourneau won its second straight game with a 10-3 victory over Vermont State Castleton on Tuesday night at Conrad-Vernon Field. Dane Jones produced his fifth career multi-homer game with his two home runs to go along with four RBIs. His six home runs on the year are tied for second in Division III. The two Joneses homered in the same inning. A four-run third inning for LeTourneau (2-7) broke open a close game and the YellowJackets cruised from there. Dane Jones got the inning going with his solo shot to left field before back-to-back triples from Hayden Norris and Xander Nabors made it a 3-0 YellowJacket lead.

A Briggs Loveland two-run home run sparked the Lions offense on Opening day to propel the Emerson to a 5-2 win over New England College. Brett Patnode got the scoring started for the Pilgrims in the top of the third inning with an RBI double to left field that drove in Bryce Worth and gave NEC a 1-0 lead. The Lions responded in the home half of the third inning when Anthony Santosuoso reached on an error to lead off the inning before Briggs Loveland homered to left field, giving the Lions a 2-1 lead. Chris Ferara was responsible for the next two Lions' runs as he drove in Blake Benway with a double to left-center in in bottom of the sixth inning before later scoring on a balk. After 6 full innings, the Lions led 4-2. Bryce Worth cut into the Lions lead in the top of the seventh inning with a solo home run. The Lions pushed across an insurance run in the bottom of the seventh as they secured the first victory of 2024 by a margin of 5-2.

Despite being down 7-1 in the fourth, LaGrange stormed back to win 11-7. The Eagles built a 7-1 lead throught four before the Panthers stalked the comeback win. The fourth finished tied at 7-7. In the fifth, the Panthers took a lead for the first time and continues to add insurance. In the ninth inning, senior Benjamin Epperley was relieved by sophomore Eli Folds to finish out the game on the mound. Folds closed out the game and the Panthers would hold on to win 11-7.

Behind a four-run seventh-inning rally, Union College opened the season with an 8-6 victory over SUNY New Paltz on Tuesday afternoon at Central Park A Diamond. The win marks the first for Union head coach John Muller. The sophomores came up big in the season opener. Sophomore Liam McIlroy went 3-for-4 with a run and an RBI from the leadoff spot while classmate Andrew Keaveney registered Union's first homerun of the season with a solo blast on a day that saw him go 2-for-3 with a pair of runs scored and an RBI. Sophomore Cooper Ames had a timely hit in the seventh to knock in a pair of runs.

Senior second baseman Frank Ebling doubled in three runs in the top half of the sixth inning, but the rains came an inning later as today's contest at Rutgers-Camden (2-1) was called in the Scarlet Raptors favor, 16-6, with one out in the top of the seventh. Sophomore right fielder Sam Junker (2-for-4, RBI) and junior designated hitter Ricky Templeton (2-for-3, 1R) both recorded multiple hits for Gwynedd Mercy (1-3) and sophomore catcher Mike Storti (1-for-3, 2RBI) knocked in two runs with a fourth-inning double before Ebling doubled in three more Griffins in the sixth. Junior Ethan Ferraro took the loss (0-1).

The Vaughn Parker era started off with a W as Wilson defeated Hood 5-4 in the season opener on Tuesday afternoon. Peyton Taylor provided the go-ahead game-winning run in the top of the ninth after advancing home on a steal by Brady Andre, while Emilio Rodriguez provided the save as he struck out a pair with a runner in scoring position to end the game. It was the fourth consecutive season opening win for the Blue and White who remain unbeaten in three games all-time against the Blazers.

Marymount remains undefeated after picking up their first road win of the season at Stevenson on Tuesday afternoon, 7-3. Ryan Mariani, in his first start for Marymount, picked up the win on the mound. He went 6.0 strong innings of work with six punchouts, allowing just a pair of earned runs. After a scoreless first four innings of play, the Saints broke through in the top of the fifth with an RBI single from Quincy Via and tacked on two more in the same inning with a two-RBI triple off the bat of Bobby Leitzel. The Mustangs put themselves within one after scoring three in the bottom of the seventh but Marymount put up some insurance in the top of the eighth.

Austin earned a shutout victory over NCAA Division II opponent East Central University on Tuesday in the team's home opener, topping the Tigers 2-0. The 'Roos are now 2-4 overall on the year. Gavin Brady, Zack Czarnecky, and Brant Stuber combined for a one-hit shutout, with Brady earning the win after giving up just one hit in 5.1 innings of work, and Stuber came on to get the save after pitching a perfect ninth inning. Bryce Crawford took the loss for East Central, giving up two runs on four hits with seven strikeouts in 5.1 innings on the mound. Tino Ramirez paced Austin College at the plate, going 2-for-4 with two RBI, as the team had six hits collectively.

Montclair State took down St. Joseph's (Long Island) 9-1 in
their home opener on Tuesday. Matthew Tiplady scattered
just two hits over seven innings of relief. The seven
innings marked the longest outing of his career, surpassing
his 6.1 inning start against Rutgers-Camden last season.

Cairn took on the Swarthmore Garnet on the road on a rainy Tuesday afternoon, picking up their first win of the young season, 7-4. The afternoon got underway with a stellar pitching performance out of freshman right-hander Mikey Gutierrez, who went five strong innings, allowing six hits and surrendering a single run while striking out seven in his first career start. Zach Bauers and Zachary Johnson led the way for the offense with a pair of hits and an RBI each, Johnson scoring twice as well. On the first win, Head Coach Brett Marks remarked: "Today's win was an all-around team effort. The start by Mikey Gutierrez (the first start of his career) was phenomenal through five innings. The bats came alive with some timely hitting. Swarthmore is a very good team and it was a hard fought game. Timely hitting, small ball, and great pitching is what won us the game today. The season is young but it's nice to see a full team effort this early in the season."

FDU-Florham (2-3) hosted New Jersey City (1-1) for non-conference action today and the Devils edged the Gothic Knights, 4-2 to secure their second win in four days on Vincent J. and Lenda F. Namoli Ballpark. Aaron Santos kept his bat hot with a three-for-three showing today with two RBI and a double. Brody Donovan also had a multi-hit day when he went two-for-four with an RBI. Matt Aber collected a double and crossed homeplate twice on the day.

Kean improved to 7-1 with an 11-2 rain shortened win over Drew in a makeup contest this afternoon. The Cougars pushed across six runs in the bottom of the second. Highlighting the inning was a three-run homer from Gianni Marano, his third homerun of the season. The Rangers (1-2) got on the board with a single run in the top of the third as Anthony Diaz Jr. led off the inning with a triple and came around to score on an Anthony Hernandez single. Drew added one more in the top of the fifth with a sac fly to cut the deficit to 6-2. Kean put the game out of reach in the bottom of the same inning with five more. Tyler Stone recorded a bases loaded walk and JT Abrusci lined a two RBI single. On the mound Chris Urbanik (1-1) got the win after tossing four innings of one run ball in the rain shortened affair. He struck out three.

Mary Hardin-Baylor earned a dominating win in its first road game of the season, taking a 15-3 win over St. Thomas (Texas) Tuesday evening in Houston. Carson Hagan, Rhett Grosz, Kaden deBerardinis and Easton Cline all led the Cru with two hits each while Hagan scored a team-high three runs and Grosz batted in a team-high three runs. UMHB totaled 15 runs on 14 hits, leaving just six batters on base. Keegan Symons earned the win on the mound for the Cru. Symons threw five innings with four hits and one run allowed. He struck out six of 23 batters faced, forcing seven flyouts and two groundouts.

Rose-Hulman opened their 2024 RussMatt Invitational on Tuesday with a 6-5 comeback victory over Dubuque. After a pair of runs in the fifth, Rose-Hulman was playing from behind and needed something big to happen. Colter Couillard-Rodak got the rally started with a one-out walk, and Rasmussen followed with a bloop single down the right field line. O'Connell then drove in his second run of the game with a sacrifice fly. After a walk from Oliger, Jackson Summers would deliver a pinch hit infield single on a high chopper to third. With the bases loaded and two outs, Josh Erpenbeck would be called upon to pinch hit in the biggest spot of the game and deliver with a two run double into left-center field to put Rose-Hulman on top 6-5. Dubuque had a good chance to tie with with three runners on in the final two innings, but Oliger was able to close it out to pick up his second save of the season.

Concordia (Wisc.) opened their 2024 campaign with a convincing 10-0 victory in eight innings over the Pioneers of Carroll University. The Falcons used four pitchers in the win as sophomore JT Hockers pitched the first three innings, recording one strikeout and zero earned runs on a team-high 13 batters faced. Senior Tyler Drezek and sophomore Tyler Bartczak both totaled two innings on the mound, as Drezek totaled three strikeouts, while Bartczak recorded two strikeouts and zero walks. Offensively, Ryan Le, Kyle Flynn, and Matt Miller led the game with two RBIs each.

Alma took the fields once again on Tuesday, for a doubleheader against Houghton and Wartburg. The Ascots rebounded after a tough day on Monday with two wins to improve their record to 5-3, winning 10-9 over Houghton and 9-7 over Wartburg. In game one, Cole Grunwald started on the mound for the Scots and recorded three strikeouts in two innings of work. Cam Jones came in a relief for two innings as well and recorded a team high four strikeouts. Davin Reif was credited the win for the game as he came in the seventh and Hayden Hileman was credited the save for his time on the bump in the ninth. Hayden Warren started game two on the mound and pitch four and a third innings recording four strikeouts. Hileman was credited the win as he returned to the mound in the seventh and finished the game out allowing zero hits and two strikeouts.
