St. Joseph's (Conn.) gets program's first win in split

Kalamazoo completed the three-game sweep of Earlham with a 28-4 win on Sunday. Kalamazoo's 28 runs are the second-most in school history and the highest in Coach Ott's tenure. The Hornets had 26 hits in seven innings, also the second-highest total in school history. Earlham had eight hits in the contest. The Hornets scored three runs in the first and led 3-1 after two innings. After putting another three on the board in the top of the third and leading 6-2 at the end of three, Kalamazoo scored four in the fourth, 12 in the fifth, three in the sixth and three in the seventh. Earlham added a single run in the sixth and seventh innings.

Utica completed its Sunday sweep of the Yeshiva University Maccabees with a 16-3 win in game one and a 24-1 win in game two from Silver Lake Park Fields. The Pioneers racked up 16 runs, 12 of which came in the 6th inning, over 10 hits and 11 walks. Jack Scanlon paced the offense going 4-for-5 with five RBI, two doubles and a three-bagger. The Pioneers touched home 24 times in the game two win. Jacob Pian totaled three hits with a double and two RBI & runs each. Joe Crossley went 2-for-2 with a pair of walks, three runs scored and four stolen bases. Jason Story belted his second home run of the season as part of a 2-for-3 outing. Lance Berger was the final Pioneer to finish with multiple hits as he also had two with three RBI. Derek Holmes drove in a team high five runs while Micha Fiorello and Tom Ziskin had two each.

York (Pa.) split a Sunday twin bill against #5 Lynchburg as the Spartans took two of three games against the 2023 Division III National Champions this weekend in Lynchburg. The Hornets evened the series with a 6-3 win in game one but the Spartans used a huge six-run ninth inning rally in the second game to capture an 8-3 win to earn the series win. The Spartans had a chance to get closer in the seventh of the opener as they left a pair of runners on base. That was the best chance they would get as the Hornets shut the Spartans down in the final two innings to square the series at one game each. Game two stayed a 3-2 contest in favor of Lynchburg until the top of the ninth when the Spartan staged an improbable comeback in the top of the frame. Freshman catcher Matthew Wade came up to the plate for his first at-bat of game two and blasted a drive off the wall in left center to clear the bases and give York a 5-3 lead. The Spartans weren't done as Luke Moser hit his first collegiate home run, a two-run shot to push the lead to 7-3. The Hornets got the final out of the inning but the Spartans had done all the damage they would need. Ethan Kennedy tossed a perfect ninth to close out the game and the series win.

Willamette rallied past Lewis & Clark College on Sunday, March 3, to sweep the three-game series and improve to 7-0 on the season. The Bearcats erased a 3-0 deficit with a four-run fourth inning to claim a 4-3 decision and improve their Northwest Conference record to 3-0. Lewis & Clark jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning. The Bearcats immediately answered in the top of the fourth, scoring the final four runs of the game. With a 4-3 lead, Willamette's pitching staffs was able to keep their opponent in check for the remainder of the game.

Rivier kicked off its 2024 campaign with a pair of wins, 4-3, 3-1, over St. Elizabeth on Sunday night at The Ripken Experience's Polo Grounds. The Raiders began the season in the win column for the first time since opening day in March 2015 as they jumped to 2-0 while the Eagles fell to 1-4 following the pair of losses. Starting pitcher Nolan Mederos would give the Raiders five scoreless innings on the bump in game one, striking out five while walking four batters and allowing just one hit to claim the victory. St. Elizabeth would get one back in the top of the seventh, but the comeback bid would be too little, too late as Brendan Ferris closed things up on the mound, earning his first save of the campaign. Rivier hopped out to an early lead again in game two of the doubleheader. St. Elizabeth threatened in the sixth as the bases loaded following three singles from the first four batters. With just one out, Rivier turned to Ty Baker who fanned the next two batters to get out of the jam and send the game to the final inning.

The Centenary (N.J.) Cyclones sweep the Wolves of Keuka College by final scores of 13-10, and 6-5. Their record now sits at 3-3 on the season. There was a lot of offense in game one of the doubleheader as the Cyclones would come away from the game with thirteen total runs, and eight hits. Picking up the win for the Cyclones was Sophomore pitcher, Anthony Fraser who threw one inning striking out two batters. Getting the start on the mound for the second game, was Zach Gehman who would throw six and two-third innings, recording six strikeouts, and threw four scoreless innings for the Cyclones. First year pitcher, Drew Oppenheim came in to record the final out, in the top of the seventh inning earning him his first career win. With the game on the line, First Year Utility Player Joseph Frei, drove in the game winning run with the bases loaded in a tied game during the bottom of the seventh inning.

Ithaca earned its first victories of the season on
Sunday afternoon as the Bombers defeated the
College of Mount Saint Vincent, 16-3, and then
topped the United States Merchant Marine Academy,
2-0. Both games were played at USMMA.

No. 1 nationally ranked Baldwin Wallace took down in-state opponent Bluffton by a score of 11-6 at the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic at the Terry Park Sports Complex. BW (4-2) jumped out to an early lead in the second inning but it was not long until Bluffton (0-1) took the lead in its first game of the 2024 season. The Beavers would go on to take a 6-3 lead in the sixth before the Yellow Jackets went on a 8-0 run to close the game.

Case Western Reserve University junior right fielder Nick Harms hit the 22nd home run as a Spartan to match the program's career record, as the Spartans went on to defeat the College of Wooster 9-5 in the team's home opener at Nobby's Ballpark in Cleveland on Sunday afternoon. CWRU improved to 5-2 with the win while Wooster fell to 4-3 following the setback. Harms broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the third inning with a two-run opposite field home run over the wall in left-center field, his second of the season. The home run matched former Spartans Gordon Daily (1997-00) and Steve Rosiek (1986-88) for the most over a career in program history.

After a four-hour rain delay, Northland defeated Alfred 10-4 Sunday night in Auburndale, Fla. The LumberJacks struck out 18 batters in the win, the most in the last 10 seasons. The season-opening win is the first time since 2020 when Northland won 4-3 over Augsburg University. The LumberJacks reached base 15 times, drawing nine walks. Simpson and Kazdion Mount led the team with three walks a piece. Northland had five hits, all singles, with Murphy leading the way with two. He also led the team with three runs and two RBIs. Andrew Birko pitched the sixth inning for the Jacks with one strikeout and two earned runs to pick up the win. Northland tallied 18 strikeouts with Boyle and Vinny Troccoli totaling a team-high five.

Chapman finished out a series victory over Adrian with a 3-2 victory on Sunday at Hart Park. Following two walks and a hit batsman, Dylan Holt faced a bases-loaded, two-out situation in the top of the eighth with a one-run Panther lead. He induced an inning-ending double play to bring the momentum back to the Panther dugout. Chapman used that momentum to score the decisive third run in the bottom of the eighth on an AJ Anzai single. Despite a mistake to let the Bulldogs creep to a 3-2 deficit, Henry Chabot shut the door in the ninth, earning his fourth save of the season.

Freshman Chas Terni Jr. belted a go-ahead two run home run in the fifth inning to give Mitchell a lead in which they would not relinquish, as the Mariners topped Brandeis University 7-2 in their home opener on Saturday afternoon at Alumni Field. Terni Jr. would finish the day 3-5 with a single, double, and homer, to go along with three RBI and a pair of runs scored. Senior Robbie DelaCruz added two RBI for the Mariners, while junior Chris Gibbs picked up his second victory of the season after allowing just one earned run across five innings of work, striking out two. Senior Camren Varney came on in relief and worked four no-hit innings, walking just two and striking out five.

Junior Danny DeLucas went 6-for-6 with a double and three RBI and a solid performance from the Lycoming's bullpen, which allowed just two runs in eight innings of work on Sunday afternoon, helped it secure a doubleheader sweep of Hobart College by identical 5-3 scores at Bruggeworth Field. Sophomore Nick Reeder went 2-for-4 with two runs and DeLucas was 2-for-2 with two RBI in the first game to pace the Warriors in a come-from-behind 5-3 win over the Statesman. DeLucas added four more hits in the second game, sophomore Jack Kelly went 3-for-4 with two runs and Schilling went 2-for-5 with two RBI as Lycoming built a four-run lead and withstood a ninth-inning Hobart rally for a 5-3 win in the second game of the doubleheader.

Oneonta completed the weekend sweep with 15-2 and 6-4 wins over SUNY Canton on Sunday afternoon. The Red Dragons have won three straight and move to 3-4, while the Roos fall to 0-6. In game one, Oneonta exploded for seven runs on six hits in the bottom of the third and cruised to the opening win. Joey Dwyer batted 2-for-2 with three RBI and two runs. Nick Jacoby added two hits and two runs. Game two was a little closer, with the Roos taking a 2-0 lead in the first inning. Oneonta tied at the bottom of the frame and took a 4-3 lead. Oneonta added a pair of runs in the fifth, with Dwyer and Bradley Turner scoring. Canton looked to make the comeback in the seventh but Logan Carriero struck out the final batter to earn the save and give Oneonta the win.

Skidmore powered its way to a 6-5, 17-1 sweep of St. Joseph's University Brooklyn to open the 2024 season Sunday afternoon. The Thoroughbreds are 2-0, while the Bears are 0-3. After spotting SJU a 3-1 lead, Skidmore, Sam Kornet hit a three-run home run for a 4-3 lead. The Bears went back on top 5-4 in the fifth, before Andy Pelc and Trey Bourque each had RBI doubles in the sixth. Christian Giresi struck out six over the final three innings for the save. Quinn Hocom was credited with the win in relief of starter Ameer Hasan. Kornet finished 2-4 with a home run, double, three RBI and one run. Bourque was 2-2 with two RBI, a double, a walk and a hit by pitch. Pelc was 1-2, scoring three runs after a hit and two walks. Skidmore led the entire way in game two, scoring 17 runs on 10 hits, 12 walks and two errors. Owen Roy made the most of his collegiate debut. He went 3-4 with a grand slam home run in the fourth. He added a pair of doubles and an RBI walk to finish with six RBI.

Salve Regina University senior short stop Michael Breen singled through the right side to bring home classmate Brandon Grover with the winning run as the Seahawks walked off with Game One, 4-3, before sweeping the three-game series with the University of Southern Maine on a 6-3 final in Game Two of Sunday's doubleheader at Bill Beck Field. Lefty reliever Brendan Foley threw one pitch in the top of the ninth of the walk off win and benefitted from the Seahawks' bottom-half heroics. Starter Joe DeRienzo went 6.2 innings in Game Two and limited the Huskies to one run on three hits while striking out seven. Kyle Carozza retired all three batters face in the ninth for his second save of the season

SUNY New Paltz took on the University of Hartford, in their first two games of the season Sunday at Fiondella Field. The Hawks, looking to move past a two-game losing skid, lost the first game 16-6, but won the second game, 4-2. Hartford broke game one open in the sixth. In game two, Harford got as close as 2-2 after three but SUNY New Paltz kept Hartford scoreless the rest of the way. Gregory went 3.2 innings and allowed five hits, two runs (both earned) and two walks with three strikeouts. Jason Wall was great in relief and picked up his first win of the season. In his second appearance of the season, he went 3.2 innings, allowing no runs, hits or walks with one strikeout.
The Hawks earned their final runs of the game in the top of the fifth and won their second game of the season, 4-2.

George Fox put together an impressive game to end their series against the Whitman Blues, securing a huge 10-1 victory to wrap up the weekend. The first half of the game was largely a pitcher's duel, as starting pitcher Ben Wills contained the Blues from the mound. Though Whitman scored first with a solo home run in the second inning, Wells was able to hold the Blues batters to just four hits and a single run through his four-inning stint. The go-ahead run for Fox came in the seventh inning, where Noah Meffert singled with loaded bases to drive Shane McClendon home. And once ahead, the Bruins put on a clinic. Ryder Edwards put the finishing touches on the Bruin victory in the final two innings, striking out three batters and holding the Blues to no hits as Fox won the game, 10-1. Bleu Ellis had a stellar day with the bat, going 2-4 with a homer and four RBIs. Shane McClendon was also 2-4 in a performance that included a double, two runs, and one RBI. On the mound, Ben Wills recorded five strikeouts while allowing just four hits in his four innings. The relief pitchers were clinical, Braeden Munger earning the win after allowing just one hit, and Ryder Edwards held the Blues to no hits while recording three strikeouts.

Methodist finished its second invitational, Armstrong, of season on Sunday with a couple of wins. First the Monarchs came from behind to upset nationally ranked, #15, Christopher Newport University 12-11 in extras then followed that up with a run-rule victory, 13-3, over Immaculata University, in eight innings. The Captains got to the Methodist pitching staff early and Chris. Newport increase its advantage to 10-3, as the Captains tallied two runs in fifth before adding four more in the sixth. In the bottom of the ninth innin the Monarch's tied the score 11-11. In the 10th, a strikeout, a walk, a single, and a groundout, all in that order, had Methodist runners on second and third with two outs. Jackson Kuhn stepped up to the plate and on a 3-1 count he snuck a base hit through the left side of the infield to win it for the Monarchs. After playing catch-up in its last game, Methodist played ahead as they jumped out to a 5-0 lead. During the bottom half of eighth, the Monarchs scored the necessary five runs to invoke the invitationals run-rule.

Both of Sunday's games had the game-tying run at the plate in the ninth as Clarkson split its doubleheader against Hamilton, dropping the opener 2-1 and winning the nightcap 9-8 in non-league action. Clarkson tied game one in the top of the eighth as Kent Wilson reached on a single and then advanced to second on a failed pickoff attempt a few pitches later. Joe Figliolino then delivered a one-out single to plate Wilson. The tie would not last long, however, as Hamilton responded with a run in the bottom of the eighth. Pinch-hitter Lucas Herman opened the inning with a single and Chester Boynton replaced him as a pinch-runner. Boynton moved up on a wild pitch and a single advanced Boynton up to third. Sattinger did the rest with a sacrifice fly with what proved to be the game-winning RBI. Over the final two innings in the nightcap with a one run lead, Derrick Lewis was able to shut down Hamilton for the most part, getting three straight outs in the eighth and wiggling out of a first-and-third jam with two outs in the bottom of the ninth when he induced a ground out to end the contest.

Cortland exploded for eight runs in the bottom of sixth to erase a two-run deficit and the nationally 17th-ranked Red Dragons defeated visiting Elmira, 10-4, in a non-league matchup at Wallace Field. The contest is perhaps the earliest home game in program history. Mat Bruno finished 3-for-4 with a homer, double, four RBI and two runs scored. He homered in the first to give Cortland an early 1-0 lead, and his three-run double capped the Red Dragons' eight-run fifth. JJ DeLawder and Mitchell Kelly each drove in two runs in the fifth. DeLawder's two-run double gave Cortland a 4-3 lead and Kelly followed with a two-run double to make it 6-3. The Red Dragons' first run in the inning came on a Adam Mieczkowski bases-loaded walk. Tommy Lynch, the third of five Cortland relievers, earned the win to improve to 2-0. He entered in the top of the sixth with the Red Dragons down 3-1 and runners on first and second and retired all six batters he faced over two innings, three by strikeout. Elmira (4-3) was led by Nick Lees, who hit two solo homers. The Soaring Eagles tied the game at 1-1 in the second on a Lees' round-tripper and took a 3-1 lead in the fourth on Connor Stone's two-run homer. Lees' second homer came in the top of the eighth. Jack Finnerty started and allowed one run on two hits in three innings. Jarek Podest took the loss after giving up four runs in two-plus innings.

A six run bottom of the sixth was the deciding factor in game one and a grand slam highlighted a game two rout as WPI upended Penn State Berks in both games of the 2024 season opening doubleheader at Crosley Field on Sunday night. The Engineers (2-0) took game one 8-2, followed by a 10-0 victory in game two. Three different Engineers finished game one with a pair of hits led by Jacob Hand's 2-for-4 performance with a stolen base and pair of runs scored. Tommy Burns starred in game two finishing with a grand slam, the team's first roundtripper of the year, while Hand blasted a three-run homer to solidify the victory. Owen Radcliffe went the distance in game one pitching all seven innings allowing just three hits and a pair of runs while striking out eight. In game two, Noah Pins earned the victory pitching the first five innings of action, allowing just one hit and no runs, and striking out a dozen. Eric DePiero stepped in to close things out, allowing just one hit.

Bates swept Plymouth State in dominating fashion Sunday in a doubleheader played at the New England Baseball Complex. The Bobcats won game one 10-1 and rolled to a 14-6 win in game two. Senior Sam Hough tossed the third complete game of his career in game one and the Bobcats scored twice in the third inning to take the lead for good in a 10-1 victory over the Panthers in game one of Sunday's doubleheader. Hough did not walk anyone and struck out three in the seven-inning contest. He allowed just one run on five hits. The Bobcats scored six runs in the top of the second inning to take command of the game in a 14-6 victory over Plymouth State in game two of Sunday's doubleheader.

Second-ranked Salisbury split a pair of tight games with the Oswego State Lakers on a sun-splashed Sunday afternoon at Donnie Williams Sea Gull Baseball Stadium. The Sea Gulls took Game 1, 6-5 on a walk-off RBI single by Ben Anderson in the bottom of the 13th. The Lakers rebounded to take Game 2, 4-2. In the bottom of the 13th of the opener, Kyle Brex pushed a perfect bunt up the third base line for a one-out single. Trent Waire then drew a walk, and the runners moved up on a wild pitch. After Danny Sheeler was walked intentionally to load the bases, Anderson rocked a line drive over the left fielder's head for the walk-off single, bringing home Brex and setting off a wild Sea Gull celebration between first and second base. In game two, in the top of the eighth the Lakers put a man on second with two out. VanDreason then cracked a two-run homer to left to put OSU back in front, 4-2. Salisbury fought to get back in it in the bottom of the ninth, putting two men on with one out, but Zach Geesaman popped out to second and Dom Frigiola flew out to right, giving the Lakers a split.

Washington and Lee University split their first ODAC doubleheader at Hampden-Sydney College on Sunday as they won game one 16-2 before falling 7-6 in game two. W&L's offense came alive in the top of the 7th inning as they scored seven runs to extend their lead to 14-2 and cruise to the win. The bottom of the 4th inning in game two was crucial for the Tigers as they scored four runs to take their first lead of the game. Zulueta kicked off the 7th inning with a single to center field before Mike Carpenter drew a walk the next at-bat. Zulueta would come around to score after two wild pitches before a sacrifice fly brought home pinch-runner Mason Satterfield to bring the Generals within one.

After remaining inactive for a week and having multiple games postponed due to inclement weather, Catholic returned to action in style on Sunday, sweeping Washington College, 10-6 and 12-4, in a doubleheader. The bats came alive to push the Cardinals to 4-1 on the young season. The Cardinals wasted no time in game one, jumping out to a commanding 6-0 lead before a Shoreman even stepped in the batter's box. The Shoremen got two runs back in the bottom of the sixth to draw within four but that's where the score remained as Catholic's pitching was timely and effective. Starting pitcher Eddie Kaftan ate up 5.2 innings to earn his first victory in Catholic colors. It was more of the same from Ross Natoli's men in game two as the Cardinals again pulled out to a lead before Washington College had a chance to bat. Starting pitcher Danny Fitzgerald went 4.0 strong innings, allowing just one run before yielding to Cormac Terry. Terry emulated Fitzgerald with 4.0 frames, striking out two batters while allowing just two runs. Freshman Sean Murphy made his Catholic debut in the ninth inning, allowing just one run to secure the victory for Catholic. 

Plattsburgh State opened their 2024 season on Sunday afternoon, splitting a nine-inning doubleheader with SUNY Cobleskill, losing the first game 12-6, before taking the nightcap 6-1. Despite the first pair of games of the year, the Cardinal offense had no trouble at the plate, putting up 11 hits in each game to begin the year. Chris Santic earned the win in game two with six strong innings, as he kept the Fighting Tiger bats at bay. Over both games, Conner Gonzalski tallied four hits, while both Alex Kornblau and Mike Rasquin each had three hits. Kornblau tallied three RBI and the season's first homerun for Plattsburgh, while Gonzalski tallied a double. First-year catcher Ian Warren had a fantastic collegiate debut, registering three hits, two doubles, and two RBI in the game-one loss.

Behind strong pitching and timely runs Ursinus secured their opening victory over Spring Break with a 4-3 decision against Delaware Valley University on Sunday afternoon. The Bears used three pitchers on the day as sophomore Dan Bass, junior Connor Bogansky, and first-year Ryan Barrow combined to just give up three runs and give Ursinus their first victory of the season. Bass received the start on the mound and pitched three innings allowing just five hits, two earned runs, while striking out a batter. Bogansky was the first man out of the bullpen and recorded his first career victory pitching three innings allowing just one run on two hits and striking out four Aggies. Barrow tallied his first collegiate save by retiring the side in order in the seventh, which marks as his second consecutive clean outing on the season. During game two, Ursinus jumped out to an early 7-0 lead but due to rain the game has been postponed in the fourth inning.

Four Monarchs hit their first home runs of the season today as King's split its doubleheader against Penn State Scranton, losing 4-7 and winning 7-11, at a neutral site at Schautz Stadium. Nick Ciszak ripped two homeruns, one in each game, in addition to homers from Chase Yochem, Zach Day and Jaiden Wanamaker. Yochem also earned a double and a triple between the two games, while Day had a triple as well. The Monarchs fell short in game one with a final score of 7-4, but came back strong in the second for an 11-7 win. King's is now 2-2 overall.
