W&L Splits with Hampden-Sydney in ODAC Opener

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. - The Washington and Lee University baseball team split their first Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) doubleheader at Hampden-Sydney College on Sunday as they won game one 16-2 before falling 7-6 in game two. 

GAME ONE | W&L 16, H-SC 2

  • Nick Lagges kicked off the first inning with a double to left center field before Andrew Thornton drew a walk. With two outs, Campbell Charneco roped a double into right center field, driving in Lagges and Thornton to put the Generals (5-5) up 2-0. 
  • The Tigers (4-4) cut the lead to one as Grayson Harris singled to start off the inning before Matthew Arnold drove him in on a double to center field. 
  • The Blue and White's offense stayed busy in the second inning, driving in four more runs. Ethan Zulueta reached first after being hit by a pitch before John Turner put runners on second and third with a double to left field. After Paul Ramseur was hit by a pitch to load the bases, Lagges drove in Zulueta with a single through the left side of the infield. 
  • Drew Larsen beat out an infield single the next at-bat, bringing Turner around to score. Two batters later, Charneco hit a single down the third base line, driving in Larsen and Lagges to give the Blue and White a 6-1 lead. 
  • In the top of the 4th, Larsen and Thornton reached on singles before Larsen scored on a fielder's choice to give the Blue and White a six-run lead.
  • After Jack Wilson and Harris singled to start the bottom of the 4th, Arnold drove in Wilson on a single to center field to cut the Tigers' deficit to five. 
  • W&L's offense came alive in the top of the 7th inning as they scored seven runs to extend their lead to 14-2. Jacob Jackson kicked off the inning with a double down the left field line before Jonathan French reached first on an error by the H-SC catcher while Jackson came around to score. 
  • French would come around to score the next at-bat as John Turner reached on an error before Ramseur drove in another run with a triple to right center field. Lagges drove in Ramseur on a single to left field before Larsen moved him over to third on another single. 
  • Charneco would drive in two more runners as he doubled down the third base line, bringing Larsen and Lagges around to score. Thornton would score on a Jackson sacrifice fly to put the Generals up by 12 runs. 
  • The Generals final runs of the game would come in the 8th inning as Larsen drove in Ramseur with a single to right field while Lagges would come around to score on an error by the Tigers third baseman. 


GAME TWO | H-SC 7, W&L 6

  • The Generals' offense was productive to kick off the second game of the doubleheader as they scored three runs in the top of the 1st inning. W&L had the bases loaded as Lagges drew a walk while Ramseur and Larsen were both hit by pitches. 
  • Thornton drove in Ramseur on a sacrifice fly to right field, to put the Generals out in front by one. Larsen and Lagges successfully completed a double steal the next at-bat and both came around to score as the Tigers' catcher soared the ball into left field, giving the visitors a three-run lead. 
  • After an error gave Hampden-Sydney their first base runner of the game, Christian Lancaster lined out to right field, bringing home Harris to cut the deficit to two. 
  • The Tigers would knot the game at three in the bottom of the 2nd as Wilson kicked off the inning with a single before Harris reached on an error. Wilson and Harris would come around to score on an error by the Generals to tie the game. 
  • The bottom of the 4th inning was crucial for the Tigers as they scored four runs to take their first lead of the game. Harris singled up the middle before moving to third on a stolen base and an error.
  • H-SC would take a 4-3 lead after Jacob Miller-Bopp drew a walk with the bases loaded. Tillman Butler drove in Jaxson Masterson with an infield single before Trey Shrock gave the Tigers a 7-3 lead with a two-RBI single up the middle. 
  • In the top of the 6th, Larsen reached first on an error before moving over to third on a Charneco single to left field. Larsen would come around to score on a Jackson line out, cutting the deficit to three. 
  • Zulueta kicked off the 7th inning with a single to center field before Mike Carpenter drew a walk the next at-bat. Zulueta would come around to score after two wild pitches before a sacrifice fly brought home pinch-runner Mason Satterfield to bring the Generals within one. 
  • Alex Fitz-Hugh would close out the game for the Tigers to earn a split in the opening weekend of ODAC play.


W&L GAME NOTES

  • The Blue and White's offense produced 22 runs on 20 hits while recording seven extra base-hits. W&L matched a season-high 16 runs scored in game one.  
  • Evan Blair (1-1) earned his first win of the season after five innings of action game one. Blair allowed two runs on seven hits with two strikeouts. Brody Pasieka pitched four innings in relief, allowing three hits while striking out two Tigers. 
  • John Benner (1-1) was credited with the loss after allowing five runs (zero earned) in his 3.1 innings of action. Sims DeLong tossed four shutout innings in relief, allowing three hits while striking out four batters in game two. 
  • Drew Larsen led the Generals' offense with a 5-for-10 (.500) effort at the plate while driving in two runs. Campbell Charneco was 4-for-9 (.444) this afternoon with two doubles and a team-high seven RBIs. 


HAMPDEN-SYDNEY GAME NOTES

  • The Tigers snapped W&L's three game winning streak with their 7-6 win in game two to improve to 4-4 on the season. H-SC recorded nine runs on 20 hits this afternoon. 
  • Justin Reynolds (1-1) was credited with the loss in game one after allowing six earned runs in his 1.2 innings of action. Adam Emhoff (2-1) earned the win on the mound in game two after allowing six runs on three hits with seven strikeouts in his six innings of work. Alex Fitz-Hugh earned his first save of the season after two shutout innings. 
  • Grayson Harris was 5-for-10 (.500) at the plate while swiping four bags on Sunday.

  • The Blue and White head back to Cap'n Dick Smith Field on Wednesday, Mar. 6 as they take on the Fighting Squirrels of Mary Baldwin University at 3:30 p.m.
