#23 Majors’ comeback doused by rain, 8-9

More news about: Millsaps

The #23 Majors had a man on with no outs in the top of the seventh inning tonight when thunderstorms forced the ending of the game with Mississippi College holding a 9-8 lead.

Millsaps (19-9) scored first in the first inning thanks to a Josh Ordeneaux single with two on that was stretched to a triple thanks to a throwing error by the Choctaw left fielder. Jules Roussel and Jake Mills crossed the plate to give the Majors the early 2-0 lead.

Unfortunately, that would be the last lead that Millsaps would hold. Mississippi College got one back in the bottom of the first with a leadoff home run from Stuart Magee. They took the lead in the second with two runs off a sacrifice fly and a single up the middle, 3-1; and then they pulled away in the third with four runs off four hits to go up 7-2.

The Majors battled back in the fifth thanks to a handful of hits and a couple of Choctaw errors. Drew Leonard led the inning with a walk and moved to third two batters later off a Roussel single past the pitcher. Will Hawkins drove Leonard home with an infield single to short to cut the lead to 7-3.

Jake Mills kept the rally going with a single to center that drove in Roussel from third and Hawkins crossed thanks to another error, this time from the right fielder which pulled the Majors within two, 7-5, with one out.

Ordeneaux made the second out of the fifth with a sac fly that scored Mills from third after the error. Stephen Gates got on with a single to left and was driven in by Wes Perkins' double in the left field gap to tie the score at 7 with two outs.

At that point the Choctaws went to the pen and brought in Ian Underwood to relieve Brock Campbell. Underwood finally got MC out of the inning with a grounder off the bat of Drew Leonard that left two stranded in scoring position.

Both teams got one run in their next at-bats. The Choctaws took advantage of a throwing error by Wes Perkins to regain the lead 8-7 in the bottom of the fifth, and the Majors retied the game at 8 in the top of the sixth thanks to a throwing error and wild pitch.

What would become the winning run crossed in the bottom of the sixth after Spencer Brunson came home on a wild pitch from John Pemberton. Millsaps was in the process of getting that run back in the top of the seventh. The tying run was standing at first after Stephen Gates led the inning with a single to right when the lightning delay was called. Play did not resume.

The Majors will try to forget this one and move on as they travel to Austin College for a weekend three-game series. The opening double header will get underway at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday in Sherman, Texas.
