HOBOKEN, N.J. (March 29, 2012) – The Stevens Institute of Technology baseball team avenged an extra innings loss last week to Farmingdale State College by taking down to the Rams, 12-3, on Thursday night, March 29, at Dobbelaar Field. Stevens used 17 hits to score at least one run in five separate innings to pick up the team's 13th victory of the season and run the Ducks' home record to 11-0 this year.

The Ducks put two runs on the board before Farmingdale could record an out in the first inning. Senior infielder Tom Phillips (Spring Lake, N.J.) reached base on an error and then moved to third on a double by graduated student infielder Matt Glassman (Basking Ridge, N.J.). In the next at bat, sophomore outfielder Dan Allen (Egg Harbor Township, N.J.) drove both runners in with a double of his own.

Stevens could have done more damage in the frame after loading the bases with no outs, but the next three batters were unable to drive in any runs.

Phillips, Glassman and Allen combined for nine hits, eight runs, six RBI, three walks and three stolen bases in the victory. Phillips batted 2-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBI with a steal, Glassman raised his average to .400 on the season with a 4-for-5 effort at the plate and three runs scored, while Allen drove in four runs, scored three more, swiped two bags and walked twice in a 3-for-4 evening.

Farmingdale evened the score in the top of the second inning to tie to ballgame up, but the Ducks responded with four runs of their own in the bottom half of the frame to take a comfortable 6-2 lead after two full innings of play.

Sophomore catcher Curt Lowenstein (Egg Harbor Township, N.J.) led off the inning with a single and came around to score on an Allen two-run single after Phillips and Glassman each reached base with hits. Allen then stole second and crossed the plate on an RBI base hit by freshman outfielder Brian Hennelly (Holbrook, N.J.) to cap off the four-run second.

Lowenstein also scored a run in three at bats, while Hennelly walked twice in two official trips to the play and made a pair of superb defensive plays in centerfield, one of which was a diving catch that could have possibly led to an inside-the-park homerun for the Rams if the ball scooted by Hennelly.

The Ducks would not score in the third or the fourth innings, but took a 6-3 lead into the fifth. From there, Stevens would score twice in the fifth, once in the sixth and three more times in the seventh to put the game out of reach for Farmingdale.

In the seventh, freshmen Pete Prontnicki (Edison, N.J.) and Ryan Mannello (Staten Island, N.Y.)entered the game as pinch hitters and drove in all three runs of the inning. Prontnicki singled to plate Glassman and freshman infielder Gregg Nickels (Simpsonville, S.C.), while Mannello stroked a single to left, bringing in Allen.

Nickels has been a security blanket for the Ducks' defense this season, making tremendous play after tremendous play, and showed off two more defensive web gems to keep the Rams off the scoreboard late in the game.

Freshman infielder Marc Calleo (Bayville, N.Y.) batted 2-for-5 with a run scored and RBI, while senior designated hitter TJ Alcorn (Turnersville, N.J.) picked up a hit and an RBI in four plate appearances.

Junior Kevin Mathews (Jackson, N.J.) earned his fourth win of the season in as many starts by tossing 5.1 innings of work. Mathews gave up seven hits and three runs with four walks but struck out three batters.

Over the final 3.2 innings of work, the Stevens bullpen held Farmingdale hitless and punched out batters. Senior John Martelle (Colonia, N.J.) was first out and went 1.2 innings and only allowed one runner on by way of a walk. Fellow senior Chris Tucci (Calverton, N.Y.) ran into some trouble in the eighth inning after hitting two batters and walking another, but after a mound visit, Tucci settled down and retired the side without allowing a run. The final inning was recorded by another senior, Vincent Vinci (Howell, N.J.), who faced four batters and struck out two.

The Ducks will be back on the diamond on Saturday, March 31, for a 4:30 p.m. Empire 8 Conference showdown with No. 20 Ithaca College. Stevens and the Bombers will also play a doubleheader on Sunday with a start time slated for 12 p.m.
