Hatton Totals 5 Hits, Polars Run Rule Cougars 14-2

St. Peter, MN - The Crown College Polars Baseball team faced off with the Minnesota Morris Cougars on Tuesday at the campus of Gustavus Adolphus and came out on top after 8 innings of play 14-2.

Crown scored the first run of the game in the bottom of the first inning off of a Seth Betts walk and an Ashton Long double. The Polars opened up their lead in the second innings totaling 5 hits and 6 runs in the inning. The rally started with a Mason Brock triple and after a few errors from the Cougars. Three straight hits from Cael MagillHowie Hatton, and Seth Betts drove in four to put the score at 5-1. Two more runs scored after two passed balls and Crown would end the inning with a 7-1 lead. Neither team would score until the bottom of teh 4th inning when Crown once again notched a run. Two runs from Morris in the top of the 5th inning left the score at 8-2.

The Polars also completed a feat not seen very often in the world of baseball, as Seth Betts was able to steal home in the 5th inning to give Crown a 9-2 lead. A double from Matthew Shaugabay scored Rhys Dewick in the bottom of the 8th inning. With runners on second and third Howie Hatton once again came back up to the plate. With two outs in bottom of the eighth inning Hatton ended the game with a three run home run deep to left field to give the Polars a win by ten run rule.

Howie Hatton tied the single game record for hits with 5. Hatton totaled five runs batted in including a home run in six total at bats. Both Cael Magill and Mason Brock had 3 hits on the day with Magill going 3-6 with a double and 1 RBI and Brock went 3-5 with a double and a triple. Aidan Volk-Specht started on the mound and pitched 5 innings scattering 7 hits and only 2 earned runs across them while also totaling seven strikeouts. Volk-Specht notched his third win of the season to move his record to 3-1. Jacob Van Dam finished the game on the mound and pitched 3 innings only allowing 1 hit while totaling 3 strikeouts in the process.

The Polars move to 7-7 on the season and 1-0 in UMAC play. They will head back out to St. Peter, Minnesota to take on Martin Luther in a doubleheader on Sunday, April 2nd at 11am and 1pm.
