Henry takes reins of Maryville

Maryville has named Paul Henry the baseball team’s 24th head coach in the storied  program’s 135 years of collegiate baseball. Henry served the college as the Assistant Baseball Coach and Maryville’s sports information assistant during the 2010-2011 academic year. Henry takes over the helm of a baseball team coming off a 25-15 season and being ranked within the top thirty of the ABCA coaches poll throughout the season.

A native of Mamont, Pennsylvania, Henry spent two years at Penn State Behrend College prior to coming to Maryville. Henry helped develop five first team and nine second team all-conference players as well as a conference pitcher of the year, two conference players of the year and a D3baseball.com first team All- American. Penn State Behrend made the NCAA Tournament for the pair of years that Henry served as the assistant coach.

As a former NCAA Division III student-athlete himself, Coach Henry will look to instill a coaching philosophy into his players to maximize their potential off the diamond as much as their skills on it. As a student-athlete, Henry made the all-conference honor roll for four years straight and received the Penn State Behrend Athletic Department’s Leadership and Scholarship award in 2008. Athletic Director Kandis Schram was impressed with his ability to progress student athletes to excel after graduation as well as during their time at Maryville College.

“Although his experience is limited, we were very impressed with the positive influence on the team this year. We believe that he will be a successful baseball coach for many years to come.” Coach Henry stated his responsibilities as the program leader. “As a head coach, the leadership opportunity must be embraced. In the real world, as on the baseball diamond, everything starts at the top and the responsibility ultimately falls in the lap of the head coach. Therefore, it is imperative that the head coach clearly defines expectations for the team.” Coach Henry states. “I can’t promise results, but I can promise that we are going to play the game the right way and we will work hard to achieve success on the field and in the classroom.”

Coach Henry will take the reins of a baseball team who graduated thirteen seniors in 2011; however Henry does not believe that the Scots will take a hit to achieve their goals in 2012. “We have been able to stockpile a great deal of young talent and we will continue to strive to add quality student-athletes that can compete on the field and in the classroom. Though the names and faces will change our goals will remain the same. We will work to win the conference regular season, win the conference tournament, make an NCAA regional and go deep into the post season.” Henry said.
