CHESTERTOWN, MD – Washington College senior pitcher Shane
Mattingly (Ellicott City, MD/Centennial) and freshman pitcher Matt
Christopher (Kennett Square, PA/Unionville) combined on a no-hitter
in the first game of a doubleheader versus City College of New York
as the Shoremen topped the Beavers by a 6-0 score on Sunday
afternoon at Athey Baseball Park in non-conference baseball
action. WC completed the sweep with a 10-4 win in game
two. The Shoremen are now 3-1, while the Beavers drop to
0-8.
Mattingly tossed the first six innings of the no-hitter as he
struck out 10 CCNY batters and struck out the side in the top of
the first and third innings. Mattingly, who got the win and
is 1-0 on the year, retired the first 13 batters before hitting
CCNY's Van Molloy with one out in the top of the fifth and he was
the only runner to reach base for the visitors. Christopher
tossed a 1-2-3 top of the seventh to complete the no hitter.
Senior Ryan Normoyle (Mt. Laurel, NJ/Lenape) caught the final out
as he snared the pop up from CCNY's Danny Perez. The
no-hitter was the first by Washington since Steve Raynor tossed a
perfect game against Swarthmore in a 3-0 win in 1970.
In the first game, the Shoremen took the lead for good in the
bottom of the second when senior John Rolewicz (Bear,
DE/Salesianum) scored on an RBI groundout by sophomore Ian
Remington (Guilford, CT/Guilford) to put WC up 1-0. In the
last of the third, sophomore Sean Connole (Mt. Airy, MD/St. John's
Catholic) came around to score on a two-out single through the
right side by Normoyle to put Washington up 2-0.
In the last of the fourth, freshman Kyle Mikula (Stafford,
VA/Colonial Forge) slammed a two-out, two-run double to centerfield
that chased home Christopher and Remington to make it 4-0.
The Shoremen added a single run in the bottom of the fifth and
sixth innings to provide the final margin.
For the Shoremen, junior Tyler Cotterell (Lincroft, NJ/Middletown
South) went 3-for-3 with an RBI in the win. Mikula drove in
two runs, while Remington and Rolewicz scored twice. Normoyle
added two hits for the hosts as Washington had nine as a team in
the opener.
CCNY pitcher Darius Tavarez took the loss and drops to 0-3 despite
tossing his first complete game of the season. He allowed six
earned runs and nine hits, while walking three and striking out
one.
In game two, Kennedy Tavarez put the Beavers up 1-0 in the top of
the second when he socked a solo home run to right field with two
away.
The lead would hold up until Washington put a seven spot in the
last of the second to take a 7-1 lead. Junior CY Daniel Wu
(Kowloon, Hong Kong/International Secondary School) drove in senior
Dwight Wilcox (Annapolis, MD/St. Mary's) and Remington on a two-run
single through the left side to put the Shoremen up for good at
2-1. The next batter, freshman Scott Matthews (Goshen, NY/Don
Bosco Prep (NJ) chased home freshman Dennis Thomas (Baltimore,
MD/Archbishop Curley) on a single to center to make it 3-1.
Wu would score on a failed pickoff attempt of Matthews to increase
the lead to 4-1. Matthews came around to score on a single by
Connole that made it 5-1. Sophomore Nick Marinelli (Ellicott
City, MD/Marriotts Ridge) scored on a two-bagger down the right
field line by Rolewicz and Normoyle would score when the throw from
right field got away and that capped the scoring for the frame.
The Beavers scored twice in the fourth to cut it to 7-3 on a
two-run single by Molloy, but the Shoremen scored twice in their
half of the fourth to re-establish the six-run lead at 9-3 on RBI
hits by Marinelli and Rolewicz.
Thomas scored in the bottom of the fifth on a wild pitch to make
it 10-3 in the last of the fifth and Paul Rojas scored on a wild
pitch in the top of the seventh to provide the final margin for
game two.
Connole went a perfect 3-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI for WC
in the nightcap. Marinelli, Rolewicz and Wilcox each had two
hits, Marinelli and Thomas both scored twice, while Rolewicz drove
in two. The hosts had 14 hits in the win. On the mound,
freshman pitcher Michael Long (Ellicott City, MD/Centennial) got
his first collegiate win and is now 1-0. He went five innings
and allowed three runs and three hits, while striking out
three.
For the Beavers in the second contest, Kennedy Tavarez scored
twice, while Molloy knocked in two runs. CCNY had three hits
