WASHINGTON, Pa. - The No. 2-seed Westminster College (28-15)
baseball team captured its third conference and second Presidents'
Athletic Conference (PAC) championship ever on Saturday after they
shutout the No. 1-seeded and nationally ranked Washington and
Jefferson (35-8), 6-0. The win breaks the 30-year old school record
for most wins in a single season. Its last championship came in
2005.
Westminster has earned the conference's automatic bid to the 2012
NCAA Division III Baseball Tournament, beginning May 17, 2012.
The Titans proved to be the top-pitching staff in the conference
while giving up only one earned run in 27 innings of tournament
play.
Westminster senior Vince Iosue (Euclid, OH / Notre Dame Cathedral
Latin) (5-5) was dominate on the mound with a complete game shutout
win and earned the PAC Network Player of the Game. Iosue gave up
five hits and struck out three batters, while walking two.
The Titans struck first in the first inning with a two-run RBI
single off the bat of senior Ethan Yeager (Pottstown, PA / Owen J.
Roberts) to give Westminster an early 2-0 lead. Junior Kyle Allen
(New Wilmington, PA / West Middlesex) and senior Justin King
(Fombell, PA / Riverside) scored on the play.
Westminster put the game away in the third inning with four more
runs, lifting its lead to 6-0. Senior Tim Wiand (Pottstown, PA /
Owen J. Roberts) singled in King, and would later score from a
single from junior Chris Ross (West Pittsburg, PA / New Castle).
Yeager then connected on a double, scoring Ross and would score two
batters later off a Ty Miller (Clinton, PA / Hopewell) single.
W&J, ranked No. 2 in the Mideast Region poll with a 35-8
record, will now await a possible NCAA Division III Tournament
at-large bid. Tournament selections will be announced late Sunday
night or early Monday morning.
