Allegheny's Ramsdell no hits Hamilton

Sophomore pitcher Steven Ramsdell pitched a six-inning no-hitter, catapulting the Gators to an 11-0 win in the second game of a sweep over Hamilton College on Friday afternoon.

Ramsdell pitched a complete game, striking out six while only walking one.  His memorable pitching performance follows a seven-inning complete game shutout pitched against Plattsburgh State on Mar. 18.

In the first game, the Gators used a four-run seventh inning to pick up the win.  Allegheny is currently on a three-game winning streak and has collected a 6-2 record during the 2013 spring training trip.

A sophomore transfer, Ramsdell only allowed three base runners, retiring 12 straight Hamilton batters from the first to the fourth to complete a day of strong pitching performances by the Gators.  Junior Eric Brandt, the defending Allegheny Male Athlete of the Week, won the first game on the mound with a complete-game effort, allowing three runs while striking out five.

Allegheny third year Mike Pezzone led the Gators with four hits, tallying two triples, a double and a single over the two games.  Freshman Joe Killian tallied three hits, including the game-winner in the seventh inning of the first game, finishing with a pair of RBI.  Senior James Kim added a single in the first game and a double in the second, scoring three runs.

Picking up a 2-0 lead after the first inning, Hamilton responded with a run in the second and two in the third to take a 3-2 lead entering the fourth inning.  In the fifth, Pezzone led off the inning with a triple to left field and was brought home after a sacrifice hit from senior Frank Triozzi to tie the game.

Tied heading into the top of the seventh inning, freshman Matt Sardini led off the inning with a walk.  With the bases loaded after walks to junior Kyle Davis and Kim, Killian ripped a single up the middle that scored Sardini and Davis.  A fielding error by Hamilton would score Kim and Killian, giving the Gators a four-run lead.

Hamilton threatened in the bottom of the seventh after putting runners on first and second with one out, but Brandt forced a groundout and a fly out to right field to end the game.

Pezzone sparked the Gators in the second game with his second big hit of the day, a double down the left field line to record the first hit of the second inning.  Freshman Zach Sutton launched a deep double to right center that bounced off of the warning track and landed out of bounds for a ground-rule double, scoring Pezzone.  Freshman Adam Bronson would score Sutton with a single up the left side, giving the Gators a three-run lead early.

The squad would continue to pile on runs, as Pezzone hit a triple to right center for an RBI in the third.  Allegheny would do most of the damage in the fifth inning, scoring seven off of four hits and two walks.  Sophomore Zach Gray scored an RBI with a hit up the middle that scored Sardini.

Ramsdell struck out three of the last six batters to help the Gators clinch the win.

The Gators will return to the Robertson complex and welcome Thiel on Wed., Mar. 27 at 4 p.m.
