VERO BEACH, Fla. - Senior righthander Andy Sadoski tossed his first career no-hitter to lead the Bridgewater State University baseball team to a doubleheader split with The Apprentice School on Saturday afternoon in Vero Beach, Florida.
The Bears (1-1) won the first game, 2-0, behind Sadoski's no-hit pitching. The win also marked the 499th coaching victory for BSU skipper Rick Smith. Smith is 499-272-5 (.646) in 22 seasons with the Bears. Apprentice (13-6) earned the split with a 6-3 victory in game two.
Sadoski retired the first nine batters he faced before Brock Harris reached on an error to open the fourth inning. Sadoski would give up a walk three batters later but escaped a second and third, two-out jam by inducing a harmless fly out.
Sadoski, who fanned two in the game, would retire the side in order in each of the final three innings to complete the no-hitter.
The Bears scored an unearned run in the second on an RBI single by Jacob Souza which plated Ryan Manning. Manning had singled with one out and advance to second on an error.
Bridgewater added an insurance tally in the sixth as Nicholas White doubled with one out and came around to score on Anthony Deleo's RBI single.
Manning finished 3-for-3 at the plate in his debut with the Bears, while White went 2-for-3.
Kelmin Escalera (0-2) pitched well in the loss for Apprentice as he gave up two runs (one earned) on six hits while walking two and striking out six.
In game two, a four-run first inning highlight by a bases loaded triple by Taylor Gomer, helped lift Apprentice to the 6-3 win and a split of the twinbill.
The Bears had taken an early lead with two runs in the top of the first on RBI singles by Keaghan Austin-MacInnis and Nicholas Tabak.
However, Apprentice quickly answered in the bottom half of the inning as they loaded the bases with nobody out on two walks and a single. Gomer then cleared the bases with his three-run triple and would later score the fourth run of the frame on a Zach Harding RBI single.
Bridgewater cut the deficit to 4-3 in the third as Kevin Sugermeyer singled, stole second and scored on a two-out RBI double by White.
A two-run single by Harding in the fifth would increase the Builder's lead to three and account for the final tally of 6-3.
Kenny Pennini (0-1) suffered the loss on the mound for the Bears has he surrendered six runs on nine hits with two walks and six strikeouts in 4 1/3 innings of work. Chris Pessotti allowed just one base runner (hit batsmen) in 1 2/3 innings of relief.
Harris (1-0) worked the first four innings to earn the win for the Builders as he allowed three runs (two earned) on seven hits with two walks and two strikeouts in four innings. Sam Massie worked the final three innings to record his third save of the season. Massie gave up just one hit and fanned three.
White finished with two more hits in game two as he went 4-for-6 at the plate in the doubleheader.
The Florida swing continues for the Bridgewater State baseball team on Monday. The Bears take on Penn State-Beaver at 9:00 AM and Penn State-Greater Allegheny at noon.
