THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (April 5, 2014) – For the second time this season the Maritime baseball team spun a no-hitter on the mound as senior Trevor Cannella (Sea Cliff, N.Y./North Shore) held the St. Joseph's Golden Eagles hitless through seven innings in the second game of the doubleheader as the Privateers won by a 4-0 score. In the first game, the Privateers fell by a 6-2 score.

Sarna throws perfect game

Cannella set the side down in order in the first inning with a pair of groundouts, and a strikeout. In the second inning, there were two more groundouts and a fly out. A walk to lead off the third frame broke up the perfect game attempt, but the defense helped out in the inning on a bunt and a pair of line outs, including one to junior leftfielder Pat Kirk (Brooklyn, N.Y./St. Edmund Prep), who made a highlight reel grab going to his left.

In the fourth, a pair of fly balls set the first two batters aside, a lineout to senior Nick Galli (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Joseph By the Sea) in right field with another highlight reel grab kept the no-hitter intact. Two fly balls to the outfield and a groundout retired the Golden Eagles in the fifth inning. A strikeout, fly out and popup sent the game to the seventh inning with Cannella in search of the no-no.

A groundout to the second baseman on an 0-2 pitch set the first batter aside. A muffed throw allowed another runner to reach base with one out. The next batter was called out on interference as the batter was called for running out of the baseline as the throw by Cannella struck the runner in the back. With one out to get it was a case of déjà vu from the perfect game tossed Nick Sarna (Massapequa, N.Y./St. Anthony's) earlier in the season, as a ground ball snuck through the right side of the infield, Galli charged from right field and threw the runner out as he made the final assist on the team's second no-hitter of the season.

Offensively in the game, the Privateers scored a pair in the third inning as Kirk led off the frame with a walk and moved up to second on a groundout. Junior Matthew Sollin (Rockville Centre, N.Y./South Side) walked to put runners on the corner but was erased on a fielder's choice as Galli reached. Freshman Brian McLaughlin (Massapequa, N.Y./St. John the Baptist) reached on a throwing error as both Galli and Kirk scored to put the Privateers ahead 2-0.

In the bottom of the fourth, Maritime added two more runs as sophomore Paul Woodburn (Huntingtown, Md./Huntingtown) singled and was moved up to second base on a bunt. Two batters later, senior Tom Bauer (Wantagh, N.Y./MacArthur) walked and both he and Woodburn moved up to second and third on a wild pitch. Sollin then walked to load the bases followed by Galli collecting a two-run single up the middle to give Maritime a 4-0 advantage, which Cannella helped make stick through the remainder of the game.
Cannella earned the win to improve to 2-2 on the season after tossing the seven hitless innings on 84 pitches with one walk and two strikeouts. Taking the loss was starter Jonathan Beekman (0-1) after allowing all four runs on five hits and five walks, Matt Mills closed out the game allowing just one hit over the final 2 1/3 innings.

In the opener, the Privateers sent senior right-hander Kurt Niemeyer (Nanuet, N.Y./Nanuet Senior) to the hill in search of his first win of the season. The Golden Eagles plated their first run of the afternoon in the top of the second inning after a hit batsman put the leadoff runner on base. A pair of groundouts moved the runner up to third, before a double brought the first run of the game home.

St. Joseph's scored twice more in the top of the third inning on a two-run double to give the Golden Eagles a 3-0 advantage. The Privateers loaded the bases in the bottom of the third inning as Sollin reached on a fielder's choice, and Galli followed with a single, two batters later junior Albert Doerbecker (Point Lookout, N.Y./Long Beach) also singled to fill the bases. However, Maritime was unable to score heading to the fourth inning.

Neither side was able to score in the fourth or fifth innings, but in the bottom of the sixth inning Maritime tacked on a run after Doerbecker led off the frame with a single. An error moved the run ahead to second base, followed by a bunt to move the runner to third. Sophomore Bruce Tyler (Miller Place, N.Y./Miller Place) drove in Doerbecker with a single down the left field line to trim the lead to 3-1.

In the top of the eighth, St. Joseph's added three more runs as Niemeyer was chased from the game in the process, as junior James Very (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mt. Lebanon) came on the retire the final two batters. In the bottom of the eighth, junior Joe Longo (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y./St. John the Baptist) led off the frame with a walk and stole second base. A wild pitch moved Longo to third, then later in the inning scored on an error to end the scoring at 6-2.

Niemeyer took the loss to fall to 0-5 as he threw 114 pitches and allowed six runs on five hits and five walks, while striking out six. Very finished off the game as he allowed just one hit and one walk and struck out one batter on 25 pitches.
