The Misericordia University baseball team won its fourth
consecutive Freedom Conference Championship on Sunday afternoon,
defeating Manhattanville College 10-6 in the "if necessary"
game.
The Cougars started the tournament with a win over FDU-Florham on
Friday, but suffered a tough loss to Manhattanville on Saturday
afternoon. However, like in years past, the Cougars bounced back to
win the Freedom Conference Championship.
Ryan Dorosh was named the Freedom Conference
Championships MVP for his efforts over the weekend. The sophomore
right-hander picked up two wins, including a stellar performance in
relief in the Cougar's victory over Manhattanville earlier in the
day.
Jeremy DeCotiis led the Cougars on offense with two hits
and three RBI while Mike Comerford had a three-run
homer. Nick Hair added two hits and an RBI and
Chris Boroch finished the game with two RBI. Joe
Tagliarini and Kyle Lindsay added a hit for
MU.
Brett Davis picked up his first win and was magnificent
on the hill in relief for the Cougars. He tossed four innings of
shutout baseball, allowing just five hits while striking out two en
route to his first win of the season.
Despite losing the game, Manhattanville did take a 1-0 lead in the
top of the first. Comerford answered with his three-run blast in
the bottom of the first, giving MU a 3-1 lead after one.
DeCotiis added an RBI triple in the second and Boroch successfully
executed the squeeze play with a perfect bunt down the first base
side to give the Cougars a 5-1 lead after three.
Manhattanville responded with a four-run fourth inning, tying the
game at 5-5 in the top of the fourth.
Again the Valiants lead didn't last long as Tagliarini scored on a
sacrifice fly to center off the bat of Boroch. Hair and Lindsay
followed with RBI singles of their own to extend the MU lead to 8-5
after four innings of play.
DeCotiis capped the Cougars scoring with a two-run single through
the right side to extend the lead to 10-5 after five.
The Valiants added one in the top of the ninth, but it was too
little too late as Cory Vogeli slammed the door on
Manhattanville, securing the Cougars fourth straight Freedom
Conference Championship.
With the win, the Cougars improved to 29-13-1 overall and earned an
automatic bid into the 2014 NCAA Tournament and will play in the
Mid-Atlantic Regional at PNC Field in Moosic, PA, which begins on
Wednesday May 14.
