Dutchmen win Liberty League title

LOUDONVILLE, NY – Union College swept the University of Rochester, 7-4 and 6-4 at Siena College Field Saturday to win the 2014 Liberty League Baseball Championship.
It was Union's first Liberty League baseball title, and the Dutchmen await word on the upcoming NCAA Division III Baseball Regional Championships.
 
The All-Tournament team featured Co-Most Outstanding Players Andrew Beaule and Jake Fishman from Union as well as teammates Sam Caruso, Anders Goetz and Dave Peretti. Rochester's Brendan Garry, Nate Mulberg, Josh Schulman and Dan Warren as well as Vassar's Trent Berg and Jason Garfinkel were also selected to the tournament team. This was Union's first ever Liberty League Championship.

The Dutchmen will play in the NCAA Division III Baseball regionals for the first time since 1965. 
 
C.J. Worley had three hits and three RBIs and relief pitcher Andrew Beaule pitched 5 1/3 shutout innings the day after a complete game win. Union had nine hits including two from Sam Caruso. Lance Hamilton and Ethan Sander had three hits each for the Yellowjackets, while Brandon Heinrich added two hits and Brendan Garry had two RBIs.
 
Beaule allowed five hits and struck out five as the second of three Union pitchers. Dane O'Neil earned the save, striking out the final batter of the game.
 
Union took a 4-2 lead in the first inning of the nightcap, winner-take-all contest. Kent Curran had a sacrifice fly to right followed by a single to the left side from Jake Fishman. Worley later drove in two on a single that dropped into shallow right for the 4-2 score.
 
Rochester came back with two in the first on a Brendan Garry. Matt Todd had a two out single in the second for a 4-3 game and Ethan Sander tied it for the Yellowjackets in the fourth with an RBI single down the left field line. The Dutchmen regained the lead in the bottom of the fourth as Sam Caruso's two out single up the middle gave Union a 5-4 lead.
 
In the fifth, Worley's RBI single with two down brought in Curran (who led off the inning with a double), and Union added insurance at 6-4.
 
In game one, the Dutchmen scored four times in the bottom of the eighth to break a 3-3 tie. Jake Fishman and Vincent Esposito each had three hits and an RBI highlighting the 11 hit attack. Chris Pignatello pitched two innings of relief for his third win in three decisions.
 
Nate Mulberg had two hits and two RBIs and Ethan Sandler and Brendan Garry had two hits each for the Yellowjackets, who had nine hits in the game.
 
Union scored the first run of the game in the second inning, when Jake Fishman doubled and later scored on a sacrifice squeeze from third off the bunt of C.J. Worley. Rochester took a 2-0 lead in he top of the fourth, with two unearned runs and RBI singles by Garry and Mulberg. Union knotted it at 2-2 in the bottom of that frame, as Fishman had an RBI single.
 
Union took a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the sixth. With two out, Joe Bradlee singled and an infield throwing error off the bat of Worley scored Bradlee all the was from first. The Yellowjackets tied it 3-3 in the eighth. Garry singled, and Eichner pinch ran. After Eychner stole second and two outs, Brandon Heinrich singled off the pitcher and past second base and Eychner scored.
 
But the Dutchmen batted around with four runs in the bottom of the eighth. With the bases loaded and one out, Anders Goetz drove in two on a single through the right side. Vinny Esposito and Sammy Caruso had consecutive RBI singles and it was 7-3 heading to the ninth.
 
Mulberg got an RBI walk with the bases loaded and with two outs, but Pignatello ended the threat inducing a groundout to first base to seal the victory and force the winner-take-all title game.
