Choleva tosses no-hitter on Tuesday

Alec Choleva ended his Pioneer career on a high note with his no-hitter of Keuka.

Keuka Park, NY – Senior Alec Choleva (Coventry, CT/East Catholic), of the Utica College baseball team, tossed a no-hitter against non-conference rival Keuka College Tuesday at Kuhl Field. Choleva struck out four while walking just one batter to help UC earn the afternoon split on the road. Matthew DeMartino (Oceanside, NY/Oceanside) led Utica at the dish with four hits and four runs scored including two doubles on the day.

The Pioneers, now 8-20 overall, are right back on the diamond Wednesday as they welcome Oswego State for a twilight doubleheader.  First pitch of game one is set for 2 p.m. at the UC Baseball Field. The Storm moved its season mark to 22-12 as they wrap up regular season play.  Keuka is back in action May 9, for the first round of the NEAC Tournament in Washington, D.C.

Keuka 8, Utica 2 – Game One

The Storm jumped out to a quick 7-0 lead, over the first three innings of play, and never looked back as they went on to take game one.  KC put up one in the first and three in the second on seven hits and then added three more in the third with three more hits and the help of three Utica errors.

UC would finally get on the board in the sixth with one run off a Vincent Burillo (Montgomery, NY/Valley Central ) RBI single.  The Pioneers added another run in their last at bat before dropping game one, 8-2.

Senior Chris Jeffers (Albany, NY/Bishop Maginn) was tagged with the loss throwing a complete game while allowing eight runs on 13 hits.

Utica 8, Keuka 0 – Game Two

After two hitless innings of ball in game two, Utica rallied in the third scoring two runs on three hits and the aid of two walks and one mishap by the home team, to take a 2-0 edge.

The Pioneers moved to a 6-0 cushion heading into the final frames as they worked four hits in the fourth and fifth while converting a KC error to cushion a six run advantage.

Choleva went on to retire the final 14 batters of the Storm as he tallied a no-hit shutout to add to his impressive collegiate resume. The captain also added one hit, one run and one RBI on the day.

DeMartino and Burillo each had two hits in the win. DeMartino scored three times while Burillo knocked in one run in each contest.
