THROGGS NECK, N.Y. – Maritime Director of Athletics Heather MacCulloch announced that Charlie Barbieri has been selected to lead the Privateer baseball program. Barbieri becomes the fifth head coach in modern program history, dating back to 2005, and takes over a team that finished 2014 with a 14-18 overall record, and a berth into the Skyline Conference Tournament as the fifth seed.
"I'd like to thank Ms. MacCulloch and the selection committee
for choosing me as the next head coach to lead the program," said
Barbieri. "I am truly humbled and excited for the opportunity to
join an already outstanding group of dedicated coaches in the
Maritime athletic department. I'm looking forward to working with
an excellent group of student athletes and taking the next step in
competing for a Skyline Conference championship."
Barbieri joins the Privateer athletics department with over 10
years of coaching experience at several different levels. Since the
fall of 2008, Barbieri had served as the head coach at Midwood High
School in Brooklyn, N.Y. While there, he led the team to the
Conference Championship in 2014. In 2010, he was named the PSAL
Official's Brooklyn Coach of the Year.
Since the summer of 2009, Barbieri has also coached multiple
high-level summer and fall league teams, including the Long Island
Storm Collegiate Baseball team in the summer of 2014, where he
coached players from numerous levels of collegiate baseball.
Prior to that, he coached the Miami Marlins' 17U Scout Team in
October of 2013, and the Marlins' 18U Scout Team during the summer
of 2012, leading the team to a Perfect Game national ranking as
high as No. 3 and the World Scout League National Championship. In
October of 2011, he coached the Florida Marlins' 17U Scout Team,
and for the three previous summers, coached the Long Island Storm
Elite 17/18U teams.
Over the course of his coaching career, Barbieri has coached over
70 Division 1 players and 22 players that have gone on to be
drafted or signed by Major League Organizations, including a pair
of first round draft picks. The first was Paul Blackburn who was
selected by the Chicago Cubs in 2012, and the other being Dominic
Smith, who was selected a year later by the New York Mets in the
first round.
In addition to his coaching experience, Barbieri also served as an
associate scout for the Toronto Blue Jays organization during the
Summer of 2013.
"I am extremely excited to have Coach Barbieri joining our staff
as the head baseball coach," commented MacCulloch. "Charlie comes
to us with a wealth of knowledge and experience and I know he will
be success here at Maritime College for us."
Before his professional career in coaching, Barbieri attended
Adelphi University in Garden City, N.Y., where he received his
Bachelor's Degree in Physical Education in 2001. He later went on
to receive his Master's Degree from Adelphi in Health Education in
2007.
Before attending Adelphi, he attended C.W. Post University in
Brookville, N.Y., for two years, where he was a member of the
Pioneers' baseball team for two seasons.
