For the second time in three days, a Kenyon pitcher recorded a no-hitter. On Friday Jesse Bogacz tossed the first no-hitter for Kenyon in nearly seven years. The next one did not take nearly as long as two days later junior Paul Henshaw no-hit the Westminster College Titans.
Bogarz throws no-no in doubleheaded sweep
FORT PIERCE, Fla. – Kenyon College freshman Jesse Bogacz twirled a seven-inning no-hitter Friday and lit a fire under a Lords baseball team that swept a doubleheader from the Immaculata University Mighty Macs. Bogacz directed Kenyon to 4-0 win in game one and sophomore Thomas Morris pitched the Lords to a 4-2 win in the finale.
Bogacz (1-0) issued just three walks, hit one batter, and faced three over the minimum. Only two of four Immaculata base runners made it as far as second base. Between the first and third innings, Bogacz retired eight consecutive batters and then sat down seven straight between the third and sixth innings. He coaxed five fly-outs, seven ground-outs, and fanned eight. The only other out recorded was when Kenyon catcher Max Warren, another freshman, gunned down a would-be base-stealer in the sixth inning.
The no-hitter was Kenyon's first since Geoff Bollier and Nate Fedor combined to shut down Hiram College on March 13, 2008.
In game two, Morris did all he could to match Bogacz's performance. Morris went the distance, allowed just three hits and one earned run. He improved his season record to 2-0 and his season earned run average to 0.64. Morris yielded just one walk and struck out five.
The combined outings from Bogacz and Morris helped Kenyon jump out to a 5-2 record to start to the season and they had a huge impact on the team's sparking 2.84 ERA through those seven games.
Kenyon didn't need much offense Friday, but it got plenty from Warren, as well as Jake Dunn. Warren's day included a combined 4-for-6 effort at the plate with two triples, three runs scored, and one RBI. Dunn also went 4-for-6 and tacked on a run and two RBI. Cormac Jewell had three hits on the day and Max Heldman had two.
In game one, Kenyon picked up its first run when Warren tripled and later scored on an RBI single from Heldman in the third inning. In the fourth, Dunn tripled and scored on a single from Kyle Hardacker. Then, in the fifth, Warren, who was batting in the No. 9 hole, tripled again. Heldman walked. Jewell then singled to plate Warren and Dunn singled to bring home Heldman.
Despite Morris' brilliant game-two showing, the Lords trailed 2-1 going into the seventh and final inning. John Nahra got the call to pinch hit and he got things rolling for the Lords with a one-out single. He moved to second base on a passed ball and then to third when Tyler Roldan got aboard via an Immaculata error. Warren singled home Nahra to tie the game at 2-2. The remaining Kenyon runners moved up on a wild pitch. Heldman and Jewell then singled them home to round out the scoring and the sweep.
Henshaw no-hits Westminister
FORT PIERCE, Fla. – Sunday, two days after Jesse Bogacz blanked Immaculata University, junior Paul Henshaw no-hit the Westminster College Titans in the second game of a doubleheader. The Lords opened the day with a 4-2 win over the Titans and then used Henshaw's efforts to complete the sweep with a 7-0 victory.
Henshaw worked all seven innings of the game-two win and struck out nine batters. He did not walk or hit any Westminster batters. The only two runners the Titans got on base were via a third-strike wild pitch in the fourth inning and an error in the sixth inning. Neither of those runners reached second base.
Henshaw, who is now 2-0 with 2.03 earned run average, forced four fly-outs and eight ground-outs. He got all the run support he needed when the Lords led off the first inning with a couple of runs. Jono Chafe and Jake Dunn each singled. Phillip Nam then drove them home with a double.
Matt von Roemer had an RBI single in the fourth to make it 3-0 and then Kenyon capped off the game with a four-run sixth inning. In that late spurt, Casey Rosenfeld singled, Max Heldman doubled, and von Roemer and Andrew Petersdorf smacked back-to-back triples.
In game one, senior Tim Krahn gave the Lords another fabulous pitching performance. He pitched two outs shy of a complete game, while allowing just two runs on five hits. He stuck out seven and did not issue any free passes. Junior Spencer Byers came on in the seventh to collect the final two outs.
The Lords' pitching staff, which has led the team to a 7-2 start this season, now has a stellar 2.54 earned run average. In 71 innings pitched this season, the Kenyon hurlers have struck out 58, walked 20, and have a measly .174 batting average against.
On the offensive front in game one, Kenyon first scored in the fourth inning when Nam singled and Tyler Roldan later reached base on a fielder's choice. Max Warren then ripped a double to score both of them.
Dunn doubled in the fifth inning and came around to score on a single stroked by Nam. Finally, Cormac Jewell singled in the seventh inning and later scored on a sacrifice fly from John Nahra.
For the day, von Roemer had four hits, while Dunn, Nam, and Hardacker all had three.
