FROSTBURG, Md. –
The third-ranked and top-seeded Frostburg State baseball team entered the Capital Athletic Conference tournament championship game without a loss and cruised to a 6-0 win over second-seeded Salisbury to win their second CAC title.

With two outs in the top of the first the Sea Gulls (24-4) looked to take an early lead as Bobby Sanzone doubled down the right field line and Jordan Gowe tried to score from third but was thrown out at the plate by right fielder sophomore Connor Cooper hit his cutoff man and nailed Gowe at the plate.

The Bobcats came out in the home half of the first swinging and jumped out to a 2-0 lead. Freshman Greg Schneider led off the game for FSU (31-3) with a double through the right side. Senior Ricky Castro connected on a 0-2 pitch and sent it over the right field fence for his fourth home run of the season. The Bobcats came into the tournament leading the nation in home runs with 33 and now have 35 on the year.

Salisbury once again got a runner in scoring position and less than two outs in the top half of the second but senior Clayton Freimuth worked quickly to hold the Sea Gulls off the board as he got a line out to shortstop and a fly ball to left to end the inning.

Frostburg added a run in the home half of the second as junior Zach Keeler came home on Cooper's fly ball to right field.

The Sea Gulls had their best scoring chance in the top of the third but once again were denied a run by steady pitching and excellent Bobcat defense. Salisbury had runners at second and third with one out after a sacrifice bunt from Pete Grasso but Freimuth fanned the next two Gulls to end any scoring threat.

Salisbury led off the fourth with a single to right and Austin Barefoot sent a ball to what looked like the gap between the right and centerfielder but senior Nick Walker made an outstanding diving catch that saved a run. Freimuth got the last two outs of the inning and walked away unscathed as FSU led 3-0 going in to the home half of the fourth.

The offense continued to give Freimuth some breathing room as back-to-back hits from senior Ricky Brady and Keeler put runners on the corners for FSU. Cooper drew an intentional walk to load the bases for sophomore JT Tipon. Tipton sent the ball just deep enough to centerfield to bring home Brady on the sacrifice fly and gave FSU a 4-0 lead.

Frostburg plated its final two runs of the game in the bottom of the six to seal the 6-0 victory. With senior Lane Farmer at third, Schneider singled up the middle to bring home the senior catcher and push the Bobcat lead to 5-0. After a walk to Castro, Senior Zach Weiss followed with a single of his own to bring home Schneider from second and give Frostburg a 6-0 cushion.

Junior Nick Huff came out in relief of Freimuth in the sixth and pitched four scoreless innings for the Bobcats. With two away in the top of the ninth, the Sea Gulls were down to their final chance and Huff got Alex Lipman to chase the final pitch of the game.

Eight of the Bobcats' nine starters collected at least one hit on the day while Scheinder, Castro, Walker, Keeler and Tipton each posted a pair of hits for FSU.

Freimuth earned the win for Frostburg while Huff earned his third save of the season. Grasso endured his first loss of the season on the mound for Salisbury.

The CAC title is the second for the Bobcats and first since 2011. The win also punches the Bobcats' ticket to the 2015 NCAA Tournament which is set to begin on May 13.

The Bobcats now have 31 wins on the year and are one win shy of tying the second most wins in a year.

Frostburg State will return to action as the Bobcats travel to Catholic on April 21. The first pitch is set for 4:00 pm.
