ASC, Little East, MIAA kickstart tourneys

Western New England advanced in the ECAC New England Championships.

Western New England played a quarterfinal matchup with WPI in the ECAC New England Championship and defeated the Engineers 11-4. The Golden Bears will play top seeded Framingham State after Salve Regina/Mass Maritime on the Salve Regina campus.

St. John Fisher defeated No. 1 Cortland 12-8 win, bolstering their chances for an at-large playoff bid. The Cardinals had 25 hits in the must win.

LeTourneau demonstrated plate discipline in a 3-2, 11-inning win over Mary Hardin-Baylor in the first round of the 2015 ASC Championship Tournament in Austin.  The YellowJackets with the bases loaded saw junior Bryce Henry rally from a 2-2 count to patiently take two balls from reliever K.J. Stark to push across the winning run for LeTourneau. The early games featured a couple of one run decisions as East Texas Baptist defeated Texas-Dallas 8-7 and host Concordia (Texas) was a 6-5 winner over Hardin-Simmons. Texas-Tyler won the late game with a 9-0 drubbing of Howard Payne.

After scoring just one run through the first six innings of play, UMass-Boston unloaded 10 runs over the final three innings, which included a three run game tying bomb from pinch hitter Charlie LaPaglia, as the fourth-seeded Beacons defeated the third-seeded Anchormen of Rhode Island College by the final of 11-5. In earlier Little East tournament games, Southern Maine defeated Western Connecticut 5-3 and UMass-Dartmouth defeated Eastern Connecticut 7-4.

The  matchup of two of the top pitchers in the MIAA lived up to the hype as Adrain took a 3-2 win from Kalamazoo to advance to face Hope, a 7-6 winner over Calvin on Thursday. Adrian fell behind 2-0 and on the strength of back-to-back home runs by took a lead they would maintain through the final out.

Hamilton and Utica concluded their regular season on Wednesday with the 28th playing of the Jackie Robinson Game at Royce Field. The visiting Pioneers posted a 15-6 win, giving them a 16-12 lead in the series.  Utica will host the Empire 8 tournament while, the Continentals end their season.
