CRESTVIEW HILLS, Ky. -- Washington & Jefferson captured its 10th Presidents' Athletic Conference Baseball Championship with a 17-5 victory in Game G of the 2015 PAC Tournament.

One day after throwing a complete game and giving up one run to Waynesburg, senior lefty Jared Baird took the baseball again and went 7.0-plus innings, scattering 11 hits, and five runs with just one earned run, while striking out five.

Freshman Gannon Rooney had W&J's first five-hit game since May 17, 2013 when Scott Brady recorded five hits in an 11-8 15-inning victory over Thomas More in the NCAA Division III Mideast Regional. The rookie notched his fifth homer of the season and scored three runs. Senior Kyle Smith went 3-for-5 with a double, four RBI and three runs.

Trailing 3-0 without a hit heading to the fourth inning, the Presidents loaded the bases with back-to-back singles by Rooney and Anthony Paladino and a walk to Nick Vento. Kyle Smith brought in the first run of the game with an RBI infield single to third. Derek Helbing recorded the second RBI on a fielder's choice and the two executed a double steal to put runners on second and third setting the table for Ryan Sciullo's two-run single through the left side, putting the Presidents ahead, 4-3.

Thomas More answered back with a run in the bottom of the fourth to tie the score at 4-4, but W&J busted the game open with six runs in the top of the fifth. Michael Ruffing, Nick Morton and Rooney singled consecutively to load the bases with no outs, forcing a pitching change. Paladino and Vento both added RBI singles to prompt another mound change. Smith launched an RBI book-rule double to left center that plated Paladino, 8-4. Cory Bauer delivered an RBI fielder's choice and Ruffing capped the scoring with a sacrifice fly that put W&J ahead, 10-4.

In the eighth, Rooney belted his solo homer with one out. Vento doubled and scored on a Smith single and came in to score on a single by Helbing. The next batter, Sciullo, connected on his third HR of the season to left center, a two-run shot to put an exclamation point and extend the lead to 15-5. The Presidents added two additional runs in the top of the ninth for the 17-5 victory.

Six Presidents had multi-hit games as W&J pounded out its second-highest hit total of the season with 18 base knocks. Rooney's five hits led the way, while Smith posted three hits. Paladino, Vento, Sciullo and Morton each had two hits, with Sciullo tying Smith for the game-high with four RBI.

Bryce Schnatterly worked the final 2.0 innings, surrendering just two hits. He entered with a runner on first in the eighth and coaxed a double-play and ground out to get out of the inning.

Logan Miller, who also suffered the loss in game one of the tournament, suffered the loss in relief to drop to 6-2 after giving up five hits and four earned runs in 1.0 inning of work.

The Presidents needed the "if necessary" game after dropping a 7-4 decision in the opener on Saturday.

TMC began the first game with a pair of runs in the first. Rooney put W&J on the board with a sac fly in the third, but one run in each of the fourth and fifth innings by the Saints extended the deficit to 4-1. The Presidents tied the game at 4-4 with three in the seventh thanks to an RBI by Ruffing and sac flies from Bauer and Morton, however, in the top of the eighth, the Saints' Donovan Pogue belted a three-run homer to left for the deciding runs of the 7-4 game.

Nick Kolat suffered the loss in relief, working 1.1 inning and allowing four hits and two runs. Tim Mulvey surrendered the homer to Pogue in relief of Kolat with two on, but finished strong after that allowing just two hits. Joe Vita worked the first 6.0 innings with eight hits and four runs with four walks and three strike outs.

Bauer had the lone multi-hit showing for W&J in the opener, going 2-for-2 with a double, RBI, run and sac fly.

W&J punches its ticket to the fifth NCAA Tournament in program history, in improving to 28-15 in the process. The Presidents are scheduled to host the 2015 NCAA Division III Baseball Mideast Regional from May 13-17 at Ross Memorial Park. W&J's seed, opening round time and opponent will be released via press release on NCAA.com Sunday night, May 10, around midnight. The information will be available on www.gopresidents.com and via twitter, @wjathletics.
