Methodist kicked off the 2017 Diamond Invitational with a 6-4 victory against Mary Washington at Armstrong-Shelley Field on Friday night. With the win, the Monarchs snap a four-game losing streak and the Eagles opened their season with a loss.
Kean used a balanced scoring attack to scratch out a win in the season opener by the final of 5-3 against Stevens. The No. 19 Cougars were led by junior Frank Urso who was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and a double and sophomore Steve Santigate who recorded two RBI.
Daniel Williams hit a three-run double in the third inning and Cody Brown struck out eight to help lead No. 20 Texas-Tyler to a 5-2 win over No. 7 Trinity (Texas) in the opening game of the Clements Fluids Classic at Irwin Field. The Patriots have now swept the season series against the defending NCAA Division III National Champions after also earning a 6-2 win over the Tigers last Friday in Mississippi.
Oglethorpe roared to life over the latter half of Friday's contest with the visiting Curry Colonels at Anderson Field, turning a 2-0 deficit into an 8-2 victory. The Stormy Petrels didn't collect a hit for 4.2 innings, but answered with 8 runs and 8 hits over their final 3.1 innings at the plate and pulled away from Curry. Junior right-hander Matt Davis collected his first victory of the season with a solid 7 innings of work. He allowed 2 runs on 6 hits while striking out 9 Colonels and walking 3 of them, to go with a hit batsman. He gave up single runs in the first and fourth innings, the former coming on back-to-back 2-out hits and the latter coming on a leadoff home run, but seemed to pitch better as the game continued. He stranded a Curry runner in scoring position five separate times over the course of the game.
Puget Sound rallied for three runs in the eighth inning to beat Pacific Lutheran, 5-2, in the first home game and first Northwest Conference game of the 2017 season for the Loggers. Joshua Zavisubin was solid in his third start of the year on the hill, allowing just one earned run on four hits in 5.2 innings. The junior struck out four and walked three. Connor Dunn finished the game 2-for-3 with three RBI, while James Dejesus went 1-for-4 with two runs and came away with his third stolen base of the season.

Freshman Riley Daniels became the first Knight in program history to hit two grand slams in a single game Friday afternoon, leading the Southern Virginia University baseball team in a 22-8 win over Penn St.-Mont Alto. Daniel's pair of grand slams marks only the 12th time the feat has been accomplished in the NCAA DIII, and the first time since 2004.
Frostburg State racked up 16 hits in a dominating 21-3 win over Penn State Abington in Fayetteville. The Bobcats fell behind 1-0 after the first inning, but rebounded in a big way with seven runs in the second and nine more in the third for an early 16-1 advantage. Frostburg never looked back and later tacked on single runs in the fourth and sixth and added three in the fifth. The Bobcats racked up 16 hits and drove in 15 RBI on the day.
Caleb Bloye hit two home runs, including a walk-off solo shot in the second game, and Covenant completed a doubleheader sweep of Berea with a 13-1 win in game one before rallying for a 3-2 victory in game two. Bloye homered in game one and then blasted a walk-off homer in game two. The walk-off homer in game two was the third time Covenant has hit a walk-off home run in the program's modern history. Covenant has won five straight games and will seek its second straight three-game sweep on Saturday.
Senior leftfielder Josh Cote delivered a game-winning double in the eighth inning to help lift Rutgers-Newark to a 5-4 comeback win over Stevenson in the Scarlet Raiders' 2017 season-opener. Rutgers-Newark fell behind 3-0 after six, and then took a 4-3 lead after seven. Stevenson came back to tie the score, but Cote came through with the game-winning hit in the bottom of the eighth inning to give Rutgers-Newark the win.
Home runs by Scott Hilpert and Alex Hendra-Brown combined with six strong innings of relief pitching from Cal Neely, powered the Linfield Wildcats to a 6-2 victory over the Willamette Bearcats in the Northwest Conference opener for both clubs at Roy Helser Field.
Jeremy Hallmark worked seven strong innings and Hardin-Simmons beat Schreiner 5-1 in the weekend series opener at Mountaineer Field in Kerrville. Hallmark worked seven innings and scattered six hits and allowed just one run to improve to 1-0 on the year. Mike Richardson worked the final two innings and struck out four batters for the Cowboys.
Texas-Dallas avenged its only loss on the season so far with an 11-7 road win over No. 21 Texas Lutheran to open three-game non-conference series. The Comets will look to continue their hot start Saturday with a 12 p.m. doubleheader with TLU at Katt-Isbel Stadium. Texas-Dallas starter Jaime Andriot struck ouf five Bulldogs without giving up a walk as he picked up his first win of the young season. Andriot gave up five earned runs as he scattered eight hits in 6.0 innings of work. The Comets gave Andriot plenty offense Friday night, plating five runs in the 4th and four more in the 6th to earn the road victory.

No. 6 Birmingham-Southern used a grand slam and solo homer to help catapult them to a 13-5 win over Concordia (Texas) in their home opener. Tyler Wise hit a grand slam to left in the bottom of the eighth to put the game out of reach for the Tornados. Jack Rhodes hit the solo bomb out of the park to right field in the sixth. Wise went 3-for-5 with five RBI and one run. Jacob Drescher also had three hits on the day. He went 3-for-4 with three runs and one RBI.
Colby Schmidt drove in three runs, including the final two on a walk-off home run, and Southwestern defeated Huntingdon, 3-1, in the series opener at Rockwell Field. Schmidt deposited the second pitch of his ninth-inning at-bat over the wall in left field to make the Pirates a winner. The sophomore from Liberty Hill was 2 for 4 on the night.
Five Captains roped two hits apiece, while Michael Thomas and Caleb Myers teamed up on a three-hit gem as Christopher Newport toppled Ferrum, 6-1, during a non-conference battle at Captains Park. Leading the way, Ryan Grubbs roped two hits, knocked in a pair, and made a terrific defensive play at the plate to thwart a Ferrum rally. On the mound, Thomas carried a no-hitter into the seventh inning and eventually surrendered just one hit while striking out five to earn his first victory of the season. Later on, Myers took over in the seventh and worked the final three frames to earn his third collegiate save.
Rhodes picked up a pair of wins behind strong pitching all day long, defeating Dallas 2-0 and Piedmont at Twenty Field on the campus of Millsaps. The Lynx started the day with a 2-0 win over the Crusaders, pounding out eight hits while holding Dallas to no hits on the afternoon. Rhodes also took advantage of four Crusader errors. Against Piedmont, after allowing four runs in four innings, Rhodes completely shut down the Lions as the combination of junior Nick Ferngren and senior Jackson Lourie combined for 12 strikeouts in five innings while only allowing one hit for the 8-4 win.
Centenary (La.) took advantage of extra outs to score four unanswered runs in a 4-1 win at Letourneau. Matthew Deviller pitched seven innings and gave up only six hits and one run, giving the ball to junior Cole Lavergne for the final two innings. In the ninth, LeTourneau brought the tying run to the plate with one out, but Lavergne used only five pitches for a strikeout and groundout to record his third save of the season.
